Man Sets Victim on Fire in Alleged Jealousy-Fuelled Attack

A shocking act of violence unfolded in Bangkok’s Yan Nawa district on the evening of 8 February, when a man doused another with petrol and set him alight before fleeing the scene. Authorities believe the attack stemmed from jealousy after the victim reportedly began a relationship with the suspect’s former partner. At around 20:30 Pol Lt Manit Trutdee of Bang Phong Phang Police Station received a report of a vehicle fire inside Wat Dokmai on Soi Sathupradit 58/8. Emergency responders, including volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found a white Suzuki Carry parked near the temple’s ordination hall. The vehicle, used to transport watermelons, bore signs of fire damage on its left side. Witnesses had managed to extinguish the flames using dry chemical extinguishers before firefighters arrived. A 52-year-old man, later identified as Rachen Thepmanee, was discovered with severe burns covering approximately 80% of his body. He was immediately provided with first aid before being rushed to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital for emergency treatment. Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker, known only as “Ploen,” is a former temple driver, aged around 50. He and the victim, a temple caretaker, were said to have a history of personal disputes, allegedly linked to a romantic relationship with the same female. According to accounts, the suspect had broken up with his girlfriend about a month ago and later learned that she had started seeing the victim. The revelation reportedly sparked jealousy, culminating in the attack. “The victim was at the temple selling watermelons as usual. His vehicle was parked in its regular spot when the suspect walked up carrying a petrol-filled bag. Without warning, he threw it at the victim and set him on fire before fleeing,” a witness stated. Further reports indicate that just a week before the attack, the suspect allegedly threatened the victim’s son with a firearm at their home within the temple community. Residents, fearing for their safety, had chosen to avoid confrontation due to the suspect’s possession of a weapon. Authorities are now gathering evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from the temple and surrounding areas. Witnesses have been called in for further questioning as police work to track down the suspect and bring him to justice. -- 2025-02-09 -
