Don't know about other areas, if it's a falangie most Thais don't seem to care some do and see it as disrespectful in and around village especially around the temple areas.

I guess it depends on the culture that you raised up in.  For me, the only time that I would go shirtless in public (in any country) would be at the beach or at a swimming pool.  The same applies to wearing shorts. But that's just me ????

I would prefer it if men didn't walk about with no shirt, not a good look, including exercise

Meanwhile, in Italy:-

Senator Andrea Guglieri, the mayor of Diano Marina, a small family resort west of Genoa, and his council drew up a plan in 2000 to ban fat and ugly women from walking around in two-piece costumes.

Traffic wardens were to be entrusted with the task of stopping and examining women to ensure that they passed eight out of ten requirements, ranging from the size of their bust to the firmness of their buttocks.

New applicants flooded the predominantly male traffic warden force, and sexual harassment suits were expected to follow.

Signor Guglieri also said there was no reason why bare-torsoed men sporting tight or daringly cut trunks should not be made to pass a similar set of requirements.

A local newspaper cast aspersions on Signore Guglieri's own looks - and called for all ugly mayors to be sacked!

It just lacks class, men going shirtless, uncouth. A few weeks ago there were a couple of skinny bald old men in Jomtien running in their Speedos only, truly revolting, Thais were complaining

I see plenty of shirtless Thais, I don't feel obliged to follow their example. If I had an abs six-pack, maybe.

No, unless it's on the beach or by the pool, it's disgusting.

Yeah I am with you on your views.

Our village is a tourist area and a religious area so many  tourist don't bother to check the area they visit and wonder why they are ignored in some situations by some Thai people.

as simon43 said .......    ok at the beach or swimming pool ...

but show some dignity & respect and throw a cheap white t-shirt on when doing exercises in the park,  same as the gym.    imo

  • Popular Post

Exercising in a park shirtless? Certainly. Just put it back on when you're done. Don't walk around town without a shirt. Fact is, the police 'can' hassle you about it.

All too many young backpack tourists think that because it was the norm on Koh Phangan or Koh Tao that it's OK to  walk around half naked in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, often with a bottle of beer in each hand.  Ask yourself the question; would that be acceptable behavior in your home city?
