The Thai baht continues to weaken against the US dollar, falling to 38/$US, mainly due to the strengthening of the greenback, as a result of the recent increase in the US Federal Reserve’s base rate, which has forced other currencies, including the Thai baht, to weaken. Analysts say, however, that this is not unexpected.

Central bank increases key interest rate to 1.00 percent

The Bank of Thailand’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has unanimously voted to increase the key interest rate by 0.25%, to 1.00%, with immediate effect.

KANCHANABURI police supported by soldiers rounded up 95 illegal migrants from last night to early this morning (Sept. 28) after they had sneaked in from Myanmar and were being taken for jobs in Bangkok, Rayong, Samut Sakhon and within Kanchanaburi itself with each of them having paid 15,000-30,000 baht to the smugglers, Naewna newspaper said.

Noru weakens to tropical depression as it heads west across Thailand

Tropical storm Noru was located over the Kham Khoen Kaeo district of Thailand’s north-eastern province of Yasothon at 4am this morning (Thursday) and has already weakened to a tropical depression, as it continues to move west by north west at about 10kph, according to the Thai Meteorological Department.

MPC raises policy rate by 0.25%

BANGKOK (NNT) - Responding to current inflationary trends and the depreciating baht, the Bank of Thailand has raised the policy interest rate by 0.25% as widely expected. The rate increase by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) takes the policy rate to 1 percent per year. The central bank has also indicated it will gradually raise the policy rate to accommodate economic expansion.

One person died and two others were injured when a falling tree crushed their pick-up truck, during heavy rain in Huai Thap Than district of Thailand’s north-eastern province of Si Sa Ket yesterday (Wednesday), according to an initial report from the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation on damage being caused by Tropical Storm Noru.

Health ministry revises criteria for UCEP Plus eligibility

BANGKOK (NNT) - COVID-19’s status in Thailand is due to be downgraded to a communicable disease under monitoring from October 1 onward. Although Covid will no longer be considered a hazardous disease, the health ministry says critical patients are still entitled to emergency care under the UCEP Plus policy.
