German Engine Won’t Be Fitted Into Chinese Submarine In Thailand: Navy Chief

IT WILL BE VERY UNLIKELY for the Thai navy to buy a German-made engine to install aboard a Chinese-built submarine in Thailand, said navy chief Adm. Cherngchai Chomcherngpat yesterday (Oct. 3).

 

The newly-appointed navy chief categorically dismissed unconfirmed news reports that the German-made MTU396 engine might probably be imported and installed in Thailand aboard the Yuan-class S26T submarine which China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co is scheduled to deliver to the Thai navy in 2024.

 

The planned procurement of Thailand’s first submarine in six decades has apparently hit a snag since Germany refused to sell the MTU396 submarine engine to the Chinese shipbuilding firm under the European Union’s embargo measures banning exports of European weapon systems, combat equipment and accessories to the Asian superpower country.

Think the news post should have said " will not be able to install" instead of "will not install" as it was not the Thai Navy's decision.

You can just smell the corruption a kilometer away.

 

You wouldn't buy a new Toyota without an engine and say, "I'll just put a Nissan engine in it".

Well, some of those being getting military marching orders might be subscribed into galley rowers then. To keep the rowing synchronized, how about getting Prawatch to hit the drums - between naps that is of course ???? 

This story will haunt the navy and serve as a humorous, albeit bloody expensive, continuation of the aircraft carrier saga some thirty years ago. An aircraft carrier without aircraft is befitting to a fleet of subs without engines. 

Well done, men in funny uniforms and colorful hats, keep up the good work and carry on stealing money by the train load; the electorate is fully aware of what is going on yet does quite apparently not mind the least 8-)

Who ever thought a top design of an engine for military use could be bought by another country? Maybe when it is 20 years out of date but now now.

Australia recently cancelled their sub purchase with France. Thailand maybe can get those cancelled subs from France on the cheap. Heck, deal with the Australians to buy the French subs and on sell them to Thailand.

Just cancel the order and use the money on other more pressing issues... Like flood prevention.

Doubtful they can cancel the order if the "commission" has been received. Also, not sure they need engines if they follow the example of the aircraft carrier bought from Spain and just park it in Sattahip for tourists to admire. By installing a luxury set of suites in the empty engine room they can entice lucky tourists to spend the night in a real submarine.
