Former President Donald Trump's midterm failures may have eroded the Republican support he was counting on to avoid a criminal conviction, according to one attorney.

 

Trump has long been reported to be planning an early 2024 presidential campaign announcement as a way to stave off potential prosecution from the numerous investigations mounting against him. His hope had purportedly been to ride a wave of midterm GOP success into the announcement, but with Democrats posting historically strong results over the last week, Trump's future as a Republican figurehead and his 2024 candidacy have been cast into doubt.

So many Republicans want him gone.....tragedy is that Trumpism will stay around...so much hatred for the Democrats and many still espousing how the election was stolen.....even talk now of Nevada finding votes to steal the seat.

I hope he destroys the GOP. They deserve it after their spineless behavior for all these years.

They had two chances to impeach him and get rid of him for good reasons. In both cases they somehow thought it is more important to lie for their leader instead of being truthful and doing their best for their country.

A Trump indictment/conviction may be better for the Reps than the Dems. 

 

1.  It will get Trump out of their lives.

2. They can blame the Dems for "political persecution," a signal to the Trump base that they still support him....even though they don't.

Well said. The Dems should be careful of what they wish for. Make him the underdog being persecuted bu a vindictive Democrat party and he might use that to keep on keeping on.

Trump tried and has continued to try to get her charged. He never gave her a pass and she has never been indicted for any crimes. Her email server issues pale into insignificance compared to Trump's insiders' use of private email and burner phones.

Their best hope is for him to be convicted.

For all his faults, Biden represents normalcy to the majority of voters. Trump is a return to chaos.

Republicans are divided between those who have always supported the more conservative option, who no doubt would be happy to have anyone having similar views and who has a good chance of becoming president as their leader, and the MAGA / QAnon / Oathkeepers / Boogaloo Boys / Proud boys / <insert any other silly named conspiracy group here> brigade who see Trump as the chosen one to lead them into the promised land of right wing, white skin, Christian gun slinging righteousness (which is more than a little strange, given Trump's actions and lifestyle, both past and present.  The Hypocrite Boys would seem to be a more appropriate name for these groups).  Therefore, while many Republican supporters may well be willing to hitch their conservative wagons to another mule train, there will always be a large minority who will do all they can to skin those mules.  (As this very forum has shown). The hatred pouring out towards any Republican who speaks up against Trump, and even any Republican who is just seen as a threat to Trump's "leadership" of the party, on right wing "news" sites and their comments' sections, is downright scary and alarming.  DeSantis is now being particularly targeted by them as his star rises.  Like a group of dogs who turn on any newcomer threatening their leader of the pack, they're well on the way to ripping the party in two, with the moderate conservatives separating from the rabid ones.  In fact, it could well be argued that three parties are now appropriate.  A far left one, a central "semi-left-semi-right" one and a far right one, but I can't see that happening anytime soon.

I can remember in Australia when the Labor party split, with the formation of the Democratic Labour Party. Anti-communist, strong Catholic influence.

Arguably, the split kept the Liberals in power for more than a decade.

Voters shy away from disunity, as I suspect the Republicans found out in the mid-terms. Roe vs Wade was icing on the cake for the Democrats.

History repeats itself.
