If you stay in Pattaya/Jomtien the air quality is going to be quite reasonable most of the time. If you stay in Bangkok the air quality next to main roads is dreadful and it's something to avoid. I'm just in the habit of avoiding it where possible. That being said you don't have to walk in a straight line along Rama I. I've been in places in Thailand where Google maps shows a walking route that turns out to be on a super highway with vehicles flying by you at high speed LOL. Not the most pleasant walk! Unless they added an overhead walkway since I was last there you can't get from Siam to MBK without going down to street level.
