but you are correct in that this guy did allegedly disrespect his missus, and he took revenge through a bash, I just thought all his temple visits and the monk stays might have taught him different, seems not.

Not everyone is religious and crimes of passion occur everywhere - - but you know that - right?

Buddhism has the same loving and caring devotion as Christianity... ????

Hasnt it been banned in some countries?

Catcalling hasn't been banned in any country I've heard of. ???? The article says the guy was drunk. Alcohol has been banned in some countries. ????

All religions are silly, and how people practice at the retail level has almost no connection to the wholesale teachings, which are there to give false promises of happiness or peace or contentment...all with a silly and usually plagiarized tale of a made-up reality.

People are going to be people...everywhere....no matter the country, no matter the predominant faith. The behavior noted in this thread happens everywhere.

Nobody needed any religion to teach them how to live a decent life. If anyone reached adulthood and did not inherently know certain behaviors (e.g., murder, theft, rape, etc.) are bad and mess up a wannabe civilized society, then that person is wildly flawed, and no amount of preaching or proselytizing is going to straighten him out. Moses did not come down from the mountain after chiseling out his tablets and say, "Sorry guys, got some bad news...murder is a no no".

Most religions are also just a thin coating of some charlatan's or crazy guy's philosophy over more deeply held superstitions. Note how little the teachings of the founder of this country's major faith have to do with how people here actually live. The old myths, rituals, superstitions, etc. are much stronger. Magic amulets, tattoos, making 'merit' by releasing fish somebody else caught, thinking donated money comes back 1000 fold....

Organized religion is just a way for those lacking any useful skill to have a job. Hence preachers, pastors, monks, rabbis, priests, shaman, etc. The scam is taken to its zenith by the "Prosperity Gospel" preachers in the US, or guys who 'need a Gulfstream so I can spread the lord's word faster'.

I agree with much of what you have to say about religion.  But frankly, this thread isn't even about religion.  Yes, some idiot decided to bring religion into the conversation.  We shouldn't indulge him.

Pattaya is the worst city. Not all Christians are good why would buddhists be?

We had one in our village who used to get on the microphone who certainly did..... fortunately he seems to have moved on.

What was he saying? Was he preaching or just giving out news (in place of the village headman) or simply rambling? Even if he was preaching, he shouldn't have been and he was one single monk

They did up near Udon Thani ....  they visited the down and outs every now and then.

Visiting down and outs doesn't amount to preaching. What were they saying to the down and outs? Were you listening?

My point really was that people don't go to temples to be or to show themselves as being good people. It's a totally different mindset that you seem to not have understood. Perhaps you haven't been in Thailand long or if you have you have not made much of an attempt to understand the culture

One time he was berating foreigners, because one had the effrontery to complain about the noise he was making..... my Mrs suggested his attitude was not as to be expected from a senior monk.  Sometimes preaching... sometimes listing those who had donated, name and how much, other times telling others they should come and donate.

Yes, you'd be very wrong. Just like if you thought that about any religion!

Yep, sounds like an oddball exception
