EU corruption scandal: European Parliament offices searched

Recommended Posts

Belgian investigators searched offices at the European Parliament in Brussels on Monday, in a probe into alleged bribes from World Cup host Qatar.

It was the 20th search carried out in Belgium since Friday and the parliament president, Roberta Metsola, warned MEPs that "democracy is under attack".

Belgian police have arrested four people, among them European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili, a Greek MEP.

Qatar has denied any wrongdoing. MEPs will debate the scandal on Tuesday.

No surprise. Many of us have been talking about how corrupt the EU is for years.

Thank goodness we left.

It"s not like a Brexiteer government could have been suspected of corruption, conflict of interest or other breach to ethical rules!

(Sarcasm alert)

Certainly does. It’s great to see the rooting out of such corruption rather than covering it up…

Whataboutism at it's finest. Let's stay on topic shall we?

Wow the vice president no less.

It really does go right to the top. And as they say, the fish rots from the head.

Let's hope they start taking corruption in the EU a bit more seriously this time. It's been brushed under the carpet for far too long.

Because there's no corruption among the members of the UK"s parliament. How oblivious can someone be?

You're the one who claimed that it was a good thing that the UK left the EU. You brought the UK into the discussion. Your misstep.

Indeed it was a good thing. Always good to get out of corrupt regimes before they start to consume themselves from the inside. We got out in the nick of time, as the next decade will prove. A relevant point to the current discussion.

Talking about corruption of other governments in order to deflect from EU corruption on the other hand, is whataboutism.

If you say it's a good thing for the UK to leave the EU, then you've brought whataboutism on yourself. Or do you think that remark should enjoy some kind of privileged immunity?

The encouraging thing to note about the EU is they take this corruption seriously and attempt to tackle it.  Our lot in the UK just let that crook Mone slope off overseas to hide with her stolen 29 mill.

I said "I am glad we left".

He said "Ah but what about another government's corruption".

Try to work out which one is Whataboutism. It's really not that hard. ????

Who is "we"? How does "we" meaningfully differ from the UK in this context?

Interesting viewpoint from CNN, echoing many of the concerns the British voiced prior to leaving.

Right. There have been some cases of misused allowances. However, it seems they have made investigations and recovered these funds. ????

Perhaps they will look also into other stories, e.g. with Big Pharma?

I certainly hope so.

The less fortunate, remaining countries that are still members of the EU certainly deserve better than this.

Fortunately, it seems people are starting to confess now. The house of cards is starting to fall.

Something you don't note is that it was European law enforcement that brought this case to light. Whereas in the UK, the unearthing of government corruption depends on the press.

Well done European law enforcement (which includes UK law enforcement since the UK is also in Europe).

The EU was a very expensive bad idea at least in the existing configuration. And the biggest scandal is what the ECB does. Printing money to support bankrupt EU members.
