WITH THE mercury having dipped it led to an elderly woman freezing to death in the basement of her wooden house in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) province, Amarin TV said Thursday (Dec. 15).

Mr. Taweesak Panklang, deputy chief of Ban Rat Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor),  Soeng Sang district, was informed of a woman having died from exposure to the cold with temperature last night having dropped to 13 degrees Celsius and quickly went to investigate together with the village headman.

At the old wooden house built on stilts they found Mrs Porn, around 80 years old, lying dead on a bed in the basement with a yellow blanket covering her.

RIP, but nobody "freezes to death" with 13 degrees Celsius. Temperature in my childhood's bedroom was sometimes lower than that.

Depends on the humidity. In Bavaria I could go outside comfortably wearing a jacket at minus 15 C, in Surin I'm freezing wearing an overcoat at plus 15 C.

Yes, thread title, as most are, is silly.  Freezes ... NO.  But as article states, exposure could definitely have been a 'contributing' factor, or not, depending on the 'young' lady's health.

So how many times in your life have you said 'I'm starving' when you're not, or let's cut to the chase 'I'm freezing' when you're not.

They're colloquialisms aren't they and we all use them just as the author of this article has.

And as far this poor lady's demise goes, if the body's core temperate drops below 35 deg C, hyperthermia will set in and it's a killer. In the lady's circumstances, death by hyperthermia is a very, very likely.

And just so you know that I know what I'm talking about. 10 years ago next month, my own mother died of exposure.

Yes they do! When you are born or live long time in a country that has an average temperature of 30, then the body acclimatize. If temperature suddenly goes down to 13, the body get a similar reaction as shock.

We were in classrooms colder than that and forced to drink little  bottles of milk that sometimes had ice on them!

Got her mother here avoiding the rural cold now!

The story should be, old woman dies from neglect and lack of care.  No one from her family or village came to check on her or offer help.

Agree, if going to sensationalize the story, go with the human interest side of it, and how can family & society neglect  the elderly and allow these conditions to contribute to their death.   IF in fact, it even did.   I'll await the autopsy, which will never be reported.

Nobody will click on that story.

Same,

13c would be a summer morning in the UK.

Last night it was 14c in Chiang Mai, we had the windows open and the fan on all night.

Well done Britmantoo and no doubt you were in a nice cozy bed with a warm duvet and cuddled up to your partner. (Asians BTW give off heat quicker than we do, it's like sleeping next to a radiator)

I congratulate you on your hardiness!
