An senior police sergeant still in uniform on his way back to the station on a motorcycle was tragically killed by a speeding pick-up driver in a head-on collision, reported Thai Rath

Tham Phannara police in Nakhon Thammarat, southern Thailand, went to the scene of the accident in Moo 8 Ban Klong Thiak.

They found a badly damaged Isuzu pick-up with Uthai Thani plates stopped in the undergrowth. Two airbags had deployed.

Wirachai, 28, the driver was taken to a local hospital with head injuries.

Thirty meters away was a Honda on its side. Senior Sgt Maj Siwakorn Ngampradit, 49, a patrol officer with the Tham Phannara police had horrendous injuries.

He was given CPR but was pronounced dead in hospital after never regaining consciousness.

After doctors stitched up Wiracha he was taken to the police station where he said he had tried to avoid another bike but lost control at the bend hitting the oncoming policeman.

He has yet to be charged as police gather more evidence and take witness statements.

Thai Rath reported that the dead policeman was on his way back to the station after performing traffic duties at a school.

The media added that he had performed his duties honorably until the last minute of his life.
