Three ministries to meet Thursday to prepare for return of Chinese tourists

Senior officials of Thailand’s Public Health, Tourism and Sports and Transport ministries are scheduled to meet this Thursday to prepare for the arrival of Chinese tourists, expected to begin in the middle of this month.

 

The Chinese government has eased travel restrictions, effective January 8th, allowing Chinese citizens to travel out of the country again and allowing tourists to visit China.

 

Thai tourism-related officials said that, during the initial stage, not many Chinese tourists will visit Thailand, due to the limited number of flights between China and Thailand, and many Chinese citizens may have to renew passports which expired during the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions were strictly enforced under China’s Zero Infection Policy.

I assume that they have realised that the "initial period" coincides with the absolute peak of the traditional Chinese holiday period, Chinese New Year?

I would think that quite a few of the Chinese arrivals will take a leaf out of the Russians book and try to stay longer than a short holiday . In their position I would probably do the same.

Amazing how busy they get when it comes to attracting tourists from that particular country.

It seems China has restricted the movements of it's own citizens for a long time and only gave up the zero covid policy after huge demonstrations threatened to get out of control.

 

BUT ............  they now appear peeved because other countries are proposing to implement restrictions against Chinese travelers .

So .....don't expect too much in the way of restrictions from Thailand.  Beware the giant panda next door.

Problem is the lock downs, restrictions and extra documents regulations for travel etc, that could happen once the government panic if covid cases start to increase.  

 

They already started saying they want travellers from all countries to start getting vaccination certificates etc again now as they don't want China to feel singled out.

They def have started arriving at Christmas/ New Year week from Shanghai. Met many of them. The lockdown stories are insane.
