And so the exodus of quality expats begins. This time it's personal
Which is why I won't retire full time in Thailand. It's nice to escape from a northern winter for 3-4 months but I don't want to be there all year. Lived and worked in Bangkok for 12 years and that was enough. -

The EU's Struggle with Identity: A Shift Towards Xenophobia and Ethnic Nationalism?
Yes, a paywall article, shame, it looked interesting. The wiki article just tells of Stalin's population transfers, very common in those days, don't forget the Americans and Churchill sanctioned the ethnic cleansing of 14 million Germans after the war. The Atlantic Council is of course a vile propaganda vehicle of NATO and the US, and has no place in a discussion on culture. In Russia it is banned by law. Quite rightly too. But then your last link is not bad, it gives the full picture of Russia's diverse ethnic make up, 190 ethnicities. Quite something. As for "destruction of criticism" I don't really buy into that narrative, after all in the US the mainstream media has all but banned critical voices that attack Kamala Harris, in Germany thought crimes are used to silence critics of the government. Russia's policies are just what all states engage in. And i don't believe high culture necessarily has to be critical of the government anyway, if you remember Richard Strauss, quite good music, and not government critical at all.- 1

Cannabis-Intoxicated British Man Arrested for Trespassing and Overstay
Cannabis-fueled? Was he giggling? Did he stop at a 7 for Snickers bar? The writers where sure go out of their way to try to demonize cannabis. Cannabis doesn't cause aggression, like alcohol or ya ba does. The fact that they don't mention a single thing he did that would support their claim of his fleeing the police being "cannabis fueled". Just vague BS. -

Where to buy beer bottle condoms in Samui?
If you mean those 20 baht shops, I thought the same, and tried about four of them, plus a couple of Mr. DIY shops. Found one single beer condom. But all is OK now. -

Worst Joke Ever 2024
This one reminds me... Back in the day, maybe 25 years ago, I was sitting at a certain Mall.... waiting for my pizza for way over an hour. Pulled out the mobile phone I just bought and called the delivery number of the restaurant, then ordered same pizza. At the end I told them I wasn't home but need to send it to a different address... their shop at the Mall, complete with table number. I got a "could you please wait a moment"... phone rang in the kitchen... a head popped out of the kitchen looking at me for a moment, then ran back in, and phone operator said pizza will be with me within 10 minutes. It was. Along with manager's apology, and bill waived. Not sure it was worth a wait but it was surely memorable moment... -

k japanese government bond 6mj fund
I have a TIN and have claimed back withholding tax on savings accounts for years, so thanks for confirming that it can be done on term deposits as well. Not sure what remitted income has to do with this, as my money is in Thailand for years already, and I live here on a retirement extension. The Japanese bond has risk status 3, which I think is very low. Not interested in offshore investments, because then remitted income will come in play. -

Is Thailand Value for money
'Americans are actually quite poor.', you say. I would disagree. It's true that there were 36.8 million Americans living in poverty in 2023. That's out of 345 million people. 36.8 million is a large number, yes, but many, many more Americans--over 300 million--are not living in poverty, they are not 'quite poor'. As I said in an earlier post, the figure I found most interesting was the number of millionaires. One site said 24.5 million, another 23.7 million. With either figure, that's a lot, too. I actually think 24.5 million is way too low. These days, it doesn't take much to hit a million dollars in assets in the US--you can come close with mostly just two things. 1. Have Greatest Generation parents. They worked hard, were thrifty, saved, and many passed along money and/or real estate to their children. This happened with a number of people I know. 2. Be a USA home owner. Lots of homes in the US, in lots of places, have appreciated in value to at least half a million dollars or more. The average price of a home where I used to live in the US is now over $600,000. My siblings and all my US friends are homeowners, and each home I know of is probably worth at least $400,000 to $500,000, or more. Combine that home value with inherited money and many Baby Boomers, not to mention others, are close to a million already--without even throwing in inherited money from a spouse's parents, 401k money, cars, furnishings, stocks, mutual funds, and other investments. Someone recently said on a thread something to the effect that a million dollars in assets isn't that special these days and they are right--it no longer is. And, the number of millionaires in the US is bound to grow as Baby Boomers pass along not only their wealth, but the wealth they inherited from their Greatest Generation parents, to their children. -

Minnesota teacher pension fund under Tim Walz ‘blatantly cooked,’ investigator finds: …
“Meanwhile, Mn media outlets have ignored the story”It appears the story is not being covered as was stated in the OP. April 2024: Frustrated Minnesota teachers seek probe of pension fund. A two-tier pension system has been a growing concern for teachers, some of whom hope scrutiny of management fees will turn up extra money. https://www.startribune.com/frustrated-minnesota-teachers-paying-lawyer-78000-for-pension-review/600361962 -

Ex BLM leader sentenced to prison
If you read the news report above, you'll find that this guy was engaging in fraud entirely on his own under the guise of a similarly named organization that he created and ran by himself -- years after he no longer had any role in the real Black Lives Matters organization in Atlanta. "The allegations surfaced in April 2020 when the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center received a complaint accusing Page of misrepresenting himself as a leader of the Black Lives Matter movement and misusing the organization's funds. According to prosecutors, their investigation revealed that Page had established a social media page named Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta (BLMGA) and registered it as a non-profit capable of receiving donations, with a significant presence on the fundraising platform GoFundMe. [emphasis added] According to an FBI news release, financial scrutiny revealed that from April 2018 to May 2020, the BLMGA bank account, solely managed by Page, showcased minor transactions never exceeding $5,000. However, in the wake of George Floyd’s death, donations surged, with June 2020 witnessing approximately $36,493.80, July 2020 around $370,933.69, and August 2020 an additional $59,914.69 in contributions. These funds were directly transferred to the account operated by "Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta, Inc." ... In January 2016, court records show Page "blustered his way past security guards at the Sloppy Floyd Building by claiming he was an FBI agent." Page and the Black Lives Matter of Atlanta movement parted ways shortly after the arrest, which is when he started Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta." [emphasis added]
