Thailand Forecasts 30 Million Foreign Tourists in 2023

The Tourism Industry Council of Thailand predicted to see more than 30 million tourists traveling to Thailand throughout 2023, pumping 3 trillion baht into the country’s economic circulation.

Chamnan Srisawat, the council chairman, stated on Tuesday January 31st, that Thailand’s tourism was on an upward trend and was recovering rapidly. He expected that more than 30 million international tourists, which was closing the gap to the pre-outbreak level of 40 million in 2019, would visit the country in 2023.

 

The challenging issue now was to restrengthen the private sector battered by the pandemic. Chamnan said that the private sector still needed supportive funding, labor, knowledge, and innovation to welcome the return of tourists in this booming year.

Glad to see that predicted numbers are rising again. I was almost worried why there wasn't an upgrade over the past two weeks, but I'm sure that, towards the end of this year, the forecasts will be in the 80 to 100 million range (well above actual tourist numbers anyway)... ????

 

Also, I'm happy for Thailand that, supposedly, each of the tourists (from toddlers to grannies) will spend 100,000 baht over their one-week stay in Thailand. (I myself am looking forward to my gold-leaf breakfasts while there.)

Maybe. But millions of Laotian and Cambodian millionaires are still packing their suitcases with their currency, so they haven't actually booked their Thailand holiday yet...

On 3 January, TCT (Tourism Council of Thailand) forecast 20 mill.

 

On 11 January in the Bangkok Post, Krungthai forecast 22.5 mill.

 

On 24 January The Diplomat reported a government forecast of 25 mill.

 

On 2 February, TCT forecasts 30 mill.

Only the sky seems to be the limit. Does anyone believe these guys? Does anyone care? There is no credibility, so why would anyone listen to these inane predictions? There are so many variables, and none are likely taken into account. A looming recession. Issues plaguing Thailand, that were never addressed. The foul, bent cop publicity. Continued repression by the leadership. One could go on all day.

I think they must use a forecast model that extrapolates the figures today and projects them forward, without regard to much of anything other than arrivals. We should be careful, they might just turn out to be right.

 

But the other things you mentioned clearly are not influencing factors, leadership repression (whatever that is) and bent cop publicity, almost certainly won't affect tourist arrivals. Remember 2010 when there were tanks and snipers on the streets? Tourist arrivals took a quick hit but they bounced right back.

 

The factors, I think, that might come into play later in the year are 1) recessionary spending  2) cost of travel 3) climate. If the Baht holds about 32, the Baht will be fair value, if it strengthens below that, there will probably be losses relative to how much it strengthens.

Yes I am sure there will be more.. after the promotion of Thailand... Ban on e cigarettes and scam by the police... Visas on arrival are questionable too, alcoholsales hours, and many more " incidents" in the news , thailand will be very attractive for the tourists

Nope. I take everything they say and do with a pinch of salt, much like the RTP. They’re full of it and do all this blathering for face and job justification. Donkeys.

On this basis, December should see 140,000,000, the population of Thailand will have to relocate to make room.

Spot on. The highly selective shutdowns, which favored army cronies, and punished the common man were cruel and very unnecessary. Remember the prohibition on beer and wine in restaurants? As if every glass of wine contained covid. 

 

You cannot shut down the entire tourism industry for nearly 2 years, decimate the nightlife, hotels, restaurants and countless related businesses, engage in a very poorly planned vaccination program, create a climate of fear and panic, and then just expect because you open your doors again, tens of millions will flood in. The world does not work like that. Thailand is NOT the center of the known universe. It is becoming less relevant by the minute.

 

Tourists are forgetting Thailand. Thailand needs foreigners 100x more than they need Thailand.

Apparently you've never been to China, Shenyang and the Pearl River Delta are certainly more polluted than Thailand.

But we all need a tourist visa to manipulate the system. It doesn't mean I'm going straight to the beach.
