A well known monk who designed the roof at the chapel of a wat known as the Temple of a Million Bottles in Sisaket, NE Thailand, has died.

Now the abbot of Wat Nong Song in Saraburi, central Thailand Phra Ajarn Hai, also known as Wicharn Wihanjit passed away at 5.45 am yesterday from old age. He was 94.

Bathing rites will be held from now until February 8th.

His great creation was Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew in Kalasin.

Monks were fed up with all the beer bottles littering the area so they turned them into a glittering green and brown temple after inspiring a massive community effort.

The building's design was widely praised both by architects and environmentalists.

People flocked to the temple and it became famous.

Green beer bottles are interlinked with brown ones and tonic drink bottles are utilized as well.

The effect as shown in pictures from the Architectural Digest speak to Hai's work.

Thought it was in Sisaket?

Correct, it'll be changed.

Cheers,

Rooster

Went there back in March 2016, hardly anyone was around. I was impressed, very nice temple and immediate surroundings.

Now that's where I want to be cremated...

Now, perhaps, you can understand just how many of those bottles I had to empty down my throat to keep the builders supplied. Philanthropy comes in different forms y'know....hic!
