Thai Rath reported on a visit by the commander in chief of the Royal Thai Navy to the north of Thailand.

Admiral Cherngchai Chomcherngphaet and his entourage were in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to visit a seismic vibration station that is part of Thailand's tsunami warning system.

It also warns about nuclear tests.

The trip marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Admiral Abhakara Kiartivongse, Prince of Chumphon.

Admiral Abhakara was the 28th child of the Chakri Dynasty's fifth king, Chulalorkorn, and is referred to as the "Father of the Thai Navy".

First stop for the chief was the seismic station in Muang district of Chiang Mai where there is also the #11 Radio Station.

After paying respects to the shrine of the Navy founder, Cherngchai reviewed the work of the center listening to the problems and difficulties of staff in keeping Thailand safe from the effects of earthquakes and tsunamis.

The center was set up in 1962 under the auspices of the United States Air Force and was known as Detachment 415.

When the US servicemen left Thailand in 1976 the Thais continued to run the station for the good of the nation.

It monitors earthquakes and is part of the warning system for nuclear tests as part of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

It's also part of Thailand's systems to detect 7.0 magnitude quakes that can cause tsunamis.

Connections exist between the station and Koh Miang in the Similan islands in Phangnga in southern Thailand where sea levels are gauged as part of the tsunami warning system.

After this visit the chief went to the Ban San Thaat school in Chiang Saen district of neighboring Chiang Rai.

As further part of the commemorations of the Father of the Thai Navy he presented gifts to poor and disadvantage members of the public, particularly those affected by cold weather in the north.

Blankets, medical supplies and services and survival bags were provided as well as food and drink, haircuts and motorcycle repairs to needy members of the public.
