Daily News Thai Caption: He fell to his knees

Like them or hate them, there is huge money in growing what are often referred to as the King of Fruits - the famously smelly and, for some, delicious Durian.

But like all crops they can be subject to the vagaries of the weather and disaster struck yesterday for 6-7 orchards by a reservoir in Trat, eastern Thailand.

High winds caused nearly 10,000 of the fruit weighing 1.5 - 2.5 kilos and worth 500 baht each to fall.

They were deemed to be worth about 5 million baht.

Daily News reported that one farmer fell to his knees on seeing the destruction to his crop.

Apidech Bunlom, the Takang mayor who was called to inspect the area, said that the winds had blown from Cambodia.

Damage was worse than last year.

In addition 100-200 rubber trees and several houses in the area were damaged in the unseasonal weather.

Nil value in immature unripened fruit; season here is April-June.
