A bus driver was fined 5,000 baht and suspended from driving for 30 days after he allegedly jumped a red light at the Ratchadapisek-Lat Phrao intersection and rammed into a pickup truck on Monday morning.

Fourteen people in Bus No. 8 and the pickup truck, which was carrying a group of construction workers, were injured, four of them are in a serious condition.

The bus driver, identified only as “Samran”, is reported to have told officials at the Land Transport Department (LTD)that, while he was approaching the Lat Phrao intersection, he accelerated when he saw the traffic light about to change from green to red.

Banned for only 30 days...

he should be banned from driving public transport for life.

He knowingly accelerated at traffic lights thus seriously injuring people.

Err, you're supposed to slow down, not go faster. He's so stupid he thinks that the opposite is the right thing to do. But his reward is a month off work.

so in Thailand the green light changes to red (no amber)

The countdown numbers are designed to make the drivers test their native ability driving skills

I have no idea why junctions now have countdown signs, all over the world. They serve no purpose at all, other than to encourage drivers such as this one to speed up to avoid the red. I understand the countdown for pedestrians crossing, but for vehicles? What is the rationale behind it?
