The Disney movie “Ruby Bridges,” which tells the tale of a 6-year-old who integrated New Orleans schools in the 1960s, has been a staple of Pinellas County Black History Month lessons for years.

It never caused a stir until this year, as parents across Florida exert increased powers to question what children can see and read in schools.

A North Shore Elementary parent who would not allow her child to watch the film when it was shown in early March later complained that it wasn’t appropriate for second graders.

Guess some parents are terrified of facing the truth of our history and the healing that must come to make us a better nation very sad imo ,and btw in my mind that doesn’t exactly mean rolling over but it does mean owning up to the injustice of the past and building a more egalitarian future

I think the applicable term is ‘snowflakes’ .

Which I believe is another one of those rightwing accusation/confession thigs.

Is the  North Shore Elementary parent who would not allow her child to watch the film when it was shown in early March a fully qualified teacher. Does she have ANY teaching qualifications at all?

She later complained that it wasn’t appropriate for second graders yet it appears that other second graders have watched it for years without any ill effects

It has been a staple of Pinellas County Black History Month lessons for years.

Yet because only one, yes only one, parent has complained the film is now not permitted to be shown to second graders.

Perhaps it is just me but IMO some parts of the USA are simply falling apart.

Perhaps what the school ought to have done is take o survey of all second grade student parent for the last 5 years and see how many other second graders have been affected.

Then they can post and give the result to the complaining parent and talk about majority rules.

I feel sorry for the second grader who has to face their classmates every day, due to the stupidity of the the parent.

The movie is actually banned for all pupils in that school now until its been reviewed by a committee. "He noted that a single complaint can lead to a book or movie being removed pending review, yet the policy sets forth no time frame for considering the challenge and rendering a decision."

"The scenes depicted in “Ruby Bridges,” released in 1998, are historically accurate, Davis said, adding that the truth will not change because someone doesn’t like it."

Political movies aren't suitable for kids.  It should be removed.

You don't think that kids should learn about recent history (1960's USA).

There's nothing contentious in this short film (only 10 minutes if you skip the titles and credits).

It is. It is being torn apart by political intolerance, fundamentalist "Christian" bigotry, shored up by good old fashioned racism, leavened by a quite remarkable level of ignorance and stupidity.

You forgot to include wokeism and gender madness in that.

More craziness from schools..........................

Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton song banned from Wisconsin school class concert

MADISON, Wis. -- Administrators at a Wisconsin elementary school stopped a first-grade class from performing a Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton duet promoting LGBTQ acceptance because the song "could be perceived as controversial."

Students at Heyer Elementary School in Waukesha had prepared a rendition of "Rainbowland" for their spring concert, but school officials struck the song from the lineup last week. Parents in the district say the decision was made because the song encourages LGBTQ acceptance and references rainbows.

I have never been able to dislike Dolly Parton; Miley Cyrus, not so much, but she shows good judgment here.  Though it is an easy call--banning a song because it "could be perceived as controversial."?  Even in an elementary school, that is far to low a bar for violating the First Amendment.  Every song imaginable could be banned.
