Florida House passes 6-week abortion ban, expected to be signed by governor

The Florida House of Representatives on Thursday passed a six-week abortion ban that would replace the state's 15-week ban. The bill now heads to the governor's desk for his signature.

 

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has said he would sign a six-week ban should it be sent to his desk.

 

The ban would prohibit all abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, before most women know they are pregnant.

Most women have a period less than 6 weeks apart, so they are able to check before 6 weeks if they are pregnant.

If life begins at conception, and abortion is murder, why are any abortions allowed? Why six-weeks? Why not a full and total ban? And prosecution of anyone who seeks or aids in an abortion?

Placate the Trump’s base and signed away your chance to win over the broader national base. American’s broad support for abortion has risen since the overturning of Roe v Wade last June in most polls. DeSantis is in a no win situation to be taken seriously nation wide.

Political Darwin at work some how I don’t think the lady’s and most guys are ok with setting womens rights back 50 yrs the republicans will be on the indangered species list soon imo I think he just signed a bill for concealed carry with no checks as well he’s toast it will take awhile but he’s done imo

Recent polling finds the six-week abortion ban is not popular among Florida residents of either political party. A University of North Florida poll in March found 75% of 1,452 respondents said they either somewhat or strongly opposed the six-week ban. That included 61% of Republicans.

That's not so surprising. But I wonder how it will affect the electability of DeSantis and the legislators who supported the bill. Of course, Florida is extremely gerrymandered so that does provide legislators a big measure of protection.

You are right, and many pro life people would agree. However, political reality intrudes. Much like the gun issue, where a lot of anti gun people would rather there be zero guns in America. Most people see a compromise position somewhere in the middle. 

 

This bill allows abortions up to 15 weeks for rape and incest, and also for risk of life/substantial health risk of the mother. So it is not actually a ban.  More an imposition of responsibility on people who choose to be sexually active.

Typical punitive attitude of the right when it comes to sex.

And what this means for poor women in the region is particularly awful. They're going to have to travel farther and more expensively if they want to get an abortion. Already the costs are prohibitively high for many.

Not a punitive attitude at all. Just a recognition that having sex brings the possibility of becoming a parent. I would call that a responsible attitude and one that would hopefully encourage people to think before they bump ugly.

 

Why would poor women have to travel farther?

 

Not to mention this would be a great place for pro abortion charities to get involved, and collect the funds necessary to help those in need.

The extended provision of up to 15 weeks if due to rape or endangering a women's life is far from adequate, what happens to those who are over 15 weeks.

If the men are actual deadbeats and not paying court ordered support, then they need to be tracked down and have their wages garnished. Responsibility for actions.  No need for kids to suffer if one of their parents is a bum.

Thank  you for the stirring speech. Now let's get back to reality. You think the states are going to devote the huge sums it would take to enforce those laws? And this assumes that the fathers actually have the means to pay.

Many red states are considering legislation that will prevent women from crossing state lines to get an abortion. Those aiding such travel would also be subject to prosecution.

 

 

Idaho's governor signed a law this week making it illegal for an adult to transport a minor to get an abortion without their parents' consent, making Idaho the first state to limit interstate travel for abortion, as Republican lawmakers nationwide continue to limit abortion access.

Hopefully they will think about it BEFORE doing the deed.  Even so with this law they are allowed a generous month and a half to stop the pregnancy. Plus morning after pills, which AFAIK are still available in Florida.

I would not object to law enforcement and other agencies getting involved, with an increase in funding if necessary.  Fathers with low incomes can have a percentage siphoned off to pay down their child care debt.   Men need to step up and accept that their actions can have consequences as well as women.
