When I visited my GF's family in Sakon Nakhon, we went on those famous family van rides to all the tourists sites.

My God, I was in fear for my miserable life.  No seatbelts.  Fast driving to overtake a slow truck, near misses, and most of all, the driver was drinking his Chang Beer as was everyone esle.

The kids were not strapped in and no one cared.

That is when I realized that I was not in Kansas anymore.....555555.

Life can be cheap in this country.

In those circumstances,as I value my life (health) rather more I’d have got the driver to pull over (pretend you’re going to vomit or something) get out and make your own way back. Such risk is not worth taking for avoiding embarrassment

Are they Serious?  Most accidents are from the Don't care attitude and Lack off common sense .

Some injuries are worse from not wearing seatbelts .

But Seatbelts don't cause accidents that I know off.

158 people have died and 1,431 others have been injured in 1,422 road accidents across Thailand during four days of Songkran celebrations from April 11th, according to the Road Accidents Prevention and Reduction Centre.

On April 14th alone, 44 people were killed and 368 others injured in 368 road accidents.

Speeding accounted for most of the accidents (35.6%), followed by drunk driving (28.53%).  Motorcycles were involved in most of the accidents (83.7%).

37.77% of the accidents occurred on highways, under the Highways Department, and 36.96% occurred on roads under the jurisdictions of Tambon (sub-district) Administrative Organisations and villages. 78.80% of the accidents took place on straight roads.

So 28.53% of accidents were caused by drunk drivers , therefore 71.47% were caused by sober drivers . So are sober drivers more likely to have accidents . Thai logic  applied .

The gf's family have now got used to me wearing a seatbelt either as driver or passenger, regardless of the journey length.

This time I had to remove a dummy buckle from the seatbelt socket; both driver and front passenger seats have these to stop the warning signal.

I just don't get why there's a reluctance to embrace safety measures in Thailand.

But they do . Many times I have seen motor cyclists wearing face masks and sometimes they wear a crash helmet too .

Lack of wearing helmets and seat belts doesn’t cause accidents…

driving behavior does which is caused by aggressive attitude, disrespect for regulations and lack of proper training on how to drive

When a school ( in my town ) provides motorbike sheds for their under aged , non licenced pupils motor bikes , it kinda makes you understand why there are so many fatalities on Thailand roads. Apathy , traffic laws ignored and little if any enforcement of road safety / laws .

Never ever question or challenge the establishment lines or narratives.

Funny that.  80% of the fatalities and serious injuries are motorcycle drivers and riders.  I didn't know seat-belts are now installed on motorcycles.  ????

Have yet to see a seatbelt in the back of a songtaew/ baht bus!

You never saw a motorcycle with a seatbelt, either.

I have seen a motorcycle with airbags.  They are becoming quite popular around Pattaya.

Nice to get a little brown one with arms to wrap around you!

The airbag is in front of the driver, not behind.

I don't need to make excuses. I tell them flat-out why I am getting out and I tell them I will report them to Grab or Bolt.

I also report tailgaters and the ones that zip from lane to lane with a signal.  All of these driver aberrations put my life and my family at risk.  F them.

I like to get them ejected from the platform.  Someone in the future whose life I save might appreciate knowing I kept them from riding with some of these moronic drivers.

errr.... I'm very very very sceptical about the accuracy of this headline

Absolutely nothing new, the majority of so-called news reported here is usually way off the mark  making it a load of nonsense.
