Breaking through Thailand’s current policy making hindrances

The classic challenge when developing policy is how to formulate government policies which respond to the specific needs of the people. Nowadays, the traditional ways of designing policies, exclusively by those in authority, are changing. There is more public participation, but the lack of platforms for collaboration between stakeholders, the inability to access the legislative process and budget data and a lack of forward thinking remain barriers to Thailand being able to develop a truly inclusive policy making process.

The “Hackathon”, an event involving long hours of brainstorming prototypes, practical steps and deliverables, is becoming a common platform used in policy design. The event gathers people from various backgrounds, such as researchers, entrepreneurs, the marginalized, youth, policy makers and so on, into a group to engage in diverse conversation, exchanges of worldviews, movements and tools to design well rounded policies.

‘Hack Thailand 2023’ hosted by ThaiPBS and many other organization is just such an event, which aims to develop policies for Thailand for the next 10 years, opening up an opportunity for the government sector, policy makers and politicians to collaborate with the civic sector and to draw on data, both empirical and emotional, to bring together government, the civic sector, NGOs and the private sector to work on potential policies. The discussion is divided into health, social, environment, economy, politics and education.

Yeah that's tough one.

Especially when the needs of the people are not known.

"developing policies for the next ten years"

Except where they run contrary to the Prayut NCPO's constitutional 20 year national strategy. This provision needs to be annulled, albeit through a constitutional amendment ... good luck with that.

So there can only be hope of change but the current reality is government policy making opportunities are limited if nonexistent.

Ask candidate Prayut if he supports amending or annulling the NCPO 20 year national strategy. I don't think his answer will reflect supporting progressive policy making that is needed for a more democratized government.

The Deep State remains. Better to dream of unicorns.

Have to wonder if the beloved Thai media actually believe or understand these type of stories that they wish to promote so valiantly.
