Thailand’s new coalition government taking shape – Pita

Move Forward party’s Pita Limjaroenrat said on Thursday that his eight-party coalition is taking shape and whether more parties will join the coalition depends on the negotiating team he has set up, adding “The initial goal of the negotiation team is to find the optimal number that gives me stability, as well as making sure that we can work as a team”.

 

He was speaking at a crowded press conference at a Bangkok hotel, along with representatives of the seven other coalition partners, namely Pheu Thai, Prachachat, Thai Sang Thai, Seri Ruam Thai, Palang Sangkom Mai, Pheu Thai Ruam Palang, Pentham, which have a combined 313 House seats.

 

Pita said his party has a clear roadmap from today until he becomes PM, which includes negotiation and transition teams handling a wide range of matters.

Move Forward-Led Coalition Govt Now Consists Of 8 Partners With 313 MPs

A MOVE FORWARD-LED coalition now consists of eight partners with 313 MPs at their command, confirmed Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat today (May 18).

 

During a press conference at a Bangkok hotel, Pita announced the eight-party coalition government has been tentatively set up and resolved to endorse him as prime minister following Sunday’s general election in which the Move Forward scored a surprise victory and to put their respective campaign policies to work in the interests of the people throughout the country.

 

According to the Move Forward leader, which party is going to take charge of which portfolio of cabinet will be agreed upon among the coalition partners at a later date and it is too soon at the moment to go into details.

They need to get the majority of the necessary seats in parliament ( 373 ) without the non elected senators by any means now . Talk about a coalition wit BJT , may be that will make it possible ...

(1/3) Disagreements emerge at MOU talk among 8-party gov't coalition Fri. Prachachat Party, whose support base are Muslim voters said they cannot accept LGBT equal-marriage policy & legalisation of homemade alcohol.

(2/3) Pheu Thai meanwhile is against political amnesty fearing it'll be seen as benefiting ousted and fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinwatra.

(3/3) Sources say all parties have decided to leave the issue of amending the controversial lese majeste law, a key policy pledge of Move Forward, out of the MOU due to its sensitivity. The MOU will be signed Mon.

This is looking messy already, some of the "radical" headline policies that MFP campaigned (& won on) are not going to be accepted by their coalition partners, the only big one left on the table is cutting Army funding and conscription. Is it correct Pheu Thai + the other smaller parties now outnumber MFP in terms of voting seats?

BJT have already stated that will not happen.

 

Hard to see how the Government can be formed unless 64 Senators vote for him.
