Chuwit Drops Bombshell on Bangkok Cannabis Shop for Operating Close to High School

Bangkok — Whistleblower turned anti-cannabis campaigner Chuwit Kamolvisit is attacking a cannabis shop for operating close to a female high school in Bangkok.

The shop was located on the opposite side of the Saint Joseph Convent School, a female school with 5,000 students. Chuwit said he went to inspect the shop on May 18th following complaints from parents regarding its concerning proximity to the school.

 

Concerns were raised by anonymous concerned citizens that the presence of the cannabis shop could potentially expose children to cannabis and its influence, Chuwit said. He blamed the incident on the Ministry of Public Health for reportedly lacking effective measures to prevent such occurrences.

 

The campaigner went on to say that although the premises now had a sign indicating that cannabis is not sold to individuals under the age of 20, he did not see it the other day when he visited it.

Time for a sting operation Kuhn Chuwit. Send a schoolgirl to see if they sell to her. She’d be prepared to pay extra. I bet she’ll come back with the goods.

That's the problem, shops [not just cannabis shops] open wherever they like.

Not having to seek permission first from local authorities.

Many set-up shop, no licence, no inspection not even registering the business?

Correct. And it is that lack of control and accountability which makes Thailand so attractive to the criminal element, as well as foreigners who want to escape the PC of their own country. In Thailand no-one has to try too hard to keep up standards because no-one cares much about anything. Thailand - Hub of Apathy.

     "Anonymous concerned parents" ?   If there really were any they would have contacted the authorities themselves or demonstrated outside the shop, Why contact this nobody ?  Why did the school itself not complain?

               One of his cronies spotted this shop close to "shock horror" a catholic girls school and he just thought it was too good an opportunity to miss

              Who on earth does this clown think he is ?    making inspections , issuing seven day deadlines ?  all somewhat well above his non existent paygrade,

                Of course the shop did not contact him , why would they?  He is just a troublemaker with his own agenda.

Just apply the same rules as apply to alcohol, and cigarettes. Including allowable selling times.

I assume this shop has a valid license to sell cannabis.

 

So who, and in which government organization, approved this license?

 

Proximity to schools should be (is already?) a criteria for issuing a license, just as it is for alcohol.

 

I'm assuming the forty-three 7/11's near this school do not sell alcohol?

A cannabis sales license is obtained in Bangkok by submitting an application to the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine.

For alcohol I think it was 300 meters, but that may have been revised to the vague term "close to" which allows for some flexibility.

 

MoE issued a decree that schools must be cannabis-free zones.

 

I don't think there are any speciifc regulations currently which define exact proximity.

 

DTAM controls license issuance in Bangkok.

Why not ban the shops from selling between 11am to 5pm. Surely preventing bars from opening in the vicinity of schools, and the  ban alcohol sales to grown adults between these hours, is also intended to prevent exposure to children. Roll out the same policy for cannabis shops and shut them during school and college opening hours!

Cannabis sales are restricted to 20 years old and above. No cannabis shop is going to sell to school children.

 

If it is decided that there should be some rule on sales hours, there isn't currently for cannabis, and some shops were even touting sales during the election Sundays, then issue a new regulation (won't happen as Anutin is a caretaker Minister). A new Minister could do this quickly.

 

And if it is decided that there should be some rule on proximity to schools, then such a regulation could also be issued by a new MoPH Minister. And no licenses should be issued to premises within this area. The Police could enforce this.

 

AFAIK, I follow ~ 45 shops on LINE, and most open in the late afternoon, but do fulfill online orders 7/24/365.
