Anyone been back to Australia for the forced 2 year exile to move pension to Thailand?

I was born in Camperdown, spent the first few years inner west, then the family moved to Guildford. 

 

I miss Sydney at times but not the cold winters.

It’s actually great knowing that this should be (barring any quick return visit for a birth/marriage/funeral etc) my final ever Sydney winter!

Sydney was the best city on the planet but it's changed.

 

I saw many changes, lots of barbaric people arrived in Australia illegally. 

 

In the 90's, I worked for projects team, an engineer involved with the City Rail CCTV installion, I was 24hr on call for the police, if there was an incident I would be called out to different locations to download video footage before network was operational. 

The Skaf brothers (google has a few videos) and their middle eastern friends, raping those school girls at the train stations and elsewhere, horrendous.

 

I decided to get out of Sydney and work offshore, living in Thailand since. 

 

All my friends and family moved to QLD.

Scorecard is a phoney. 

 

He posts he's on the aged pension, then posts he's on a vets pension and did his 2 years in cheap accommodation for vet's. 

 

You can't be on both pensions, and if on a vet's pension, you don't have to do the 2 years. 

 

When I put this to him, his reply was, "I am putting you on my ignore list."

Because TGF has had four amazing holidays here with me staying free-of-charge in $10M+ harbour side mansions during those 2 years. Four is enough, she’s now seen everything what she wanted to see in Aus - in grand luxury! We both now want to travel extensively to other overseas destinations therefore no point me staying in Aus anymore.

Hello.  I’ve been looking at this topic regarding Portability & the 2 year stay in Australia to qualify it as portable to take anywhere.   
After speaking to a friend ( who’s lived in Asia for 8 years) who just went thru this procedure when going back to Australia.
  After enquiring….Centrelink staff told him that he could leave immediately after Pension approved & stay outside Australia for up to 13 weeks …But NO payts while away.   If he didn’t return within 13 weeks , the Pension would be cancelled & he would need to Re Apply .   The 13 weeks away still counts towards the 2 years though.    So….he said he could come & go in 12 week cycles , but only get payt for the time spent in Australia.    He can still spend considerable time with his wife & kid in Thailand.   He’ll basically bounce between Thailand & Australia every few months.  
 

On the other hand I’ve read reports that durations of up to 6 weeks is the normal allowance & on case by case basis .??     
 

Personally,   I returned after 10 years away , applied for a part-pension & was approved & paid within 3 weeks.  I had an online digital ID & My Gov account so applied online .   I was then advised to call personally to show my Photo IDs were actually “me”.    Simple process……the Centrelink staff member was really good & offerred to complete my application then & there .   I was NOT asked anything about my time spent overseas ( that was detailed on application)   

The approval letter I got was just the standard letter…..and nothing specific about a 2 year portability qualification period.   I’m assuming IF a I want to go away again & advise my travel info ,,I’d find out then.  Who knows. ?

 

Maybe I got lucky.   However, I like it back here on the Sunny Coast QLD & don’t mind an extended stay , maybe for good.   

 

To cut a long story short….has anyone that’s been through the pension application process actually been advised specifically about the 2 year portability situation.

I have 2  friends currently in Australia who are under the 2 year rule. 1 has done 9 months and his interaction with Centrelink is contrary to a lot that I have heard. He says they told him he can't leave at all in the 2 years or he will have to start the process again. The other friend has said he can leave after 6 months. I am not sure how he achieved this, but will know in 2 to 3 months if this is true. He does have a daughter in Thailand and this may have helped. Who knows.

 

I returned for a part pension after living here for 7 years, but, I have returned at least twice every year, have my own unit there, have my driving license, valid medicare card, have done a tax return every year, etc. so I did not have to do the 2 years.

The actual Centrelink website does state that any time spent outside Australia within that 2 year period IS counted towards the 2 years.  
And “absences” AWOL etc …..are case by case for up to 6 weeks . 

 

That “case by case” situation they have , likely explains the varied answers people are getting.    Maybe I’m already being assessed favourably , I’ll leave it at that.   If I ring up, or go see them , I could likely screw it up. 😆

 

Im not planning on going anywhere in the foreseeable future so ….let sleeping dogs lie.

That was my plan also… just stay put and do the whole 2 years in Aus, thus eliminating all concerns about how long is allowed overseas during home “detention”.

Strange comment:

 

- It's well proven / well documented that Oz citizens who have started the '2 years back inOz to re-establish a home in Oz' can do trips abroad during the 2 years. There are no concerns on this.

 

- It's not 'home detention'. During the time spent back in Oz there's no restrictions whatever on local travel / local activities. 

 

All of the above has been discussed and made clear many times but some members seem to be determined to continue to submit wrong information on this. Why?

No wrong information was given! The word detention was put inside inverted commas as a tongue-in-cheek way of saying having to go back to do the 2 years to re-establish Oz as your home. And no suggestion whatsoever was made that you cannot have overseas trips during this time.

Can you post a credible link that sets out the frequency and duration of these permissible "trips abroad?"
