WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s son Hunter has been charged with failing to pay federal income tax and illegally possessing a weapon and has reached an agreement with the Justice Department, according to a letter filed in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

As part of the agreement, made public Tuesday, Hunter Biden will plead guilty to misdemeanor tax offenses and is expected to reach an agreement with prosecutors on the felony charge of illegally possessing a firearm as a drug user. It is somewhat unusual to resolve a federal criminal case at the same time the charges are filed in court, though it is not totally unheard of.

On the far more serious weapons related felonies, he can also skate.  Can't see that happening to most Americans whose last name is not Biden.  Fake gun application, use/display of weapon illegally obtained while consuming illegal drugs, then LOSING the illegally obtained weapon.

Nobody can honestly argue there is one tier of justice applicable to all fairly and without favor. This is a tragic situation.

Tragic? How? He took a plea deal instead of facing whatever other charges they had against him.  It is a win for the justice system, and yet it does not satisfy you.....go figure.  You will continue beating the drum even if the Donald does the same thing and takes a Plea deal.  Evidence is evidence and it has to be solid enough to stand the litmus test.  When it is overpowering the majority of folks take a plea deal.

The gun charge was a reach. Misdemeanor at best. It's not like he used the gun in committing a felony.

A plea deal generally kicks things down a level from a felony to a misdemeanor, it is a win on both sides, or would you rather not allow Plea deals to be made.  As a LEO I had many cases which were felonies, and yes they included obtaining guns falsely, The individuals were allowed to plea to lesser charges as this was a deal presented to the individual.  Still a win on the DA's books, and still a conviction.  Plus the Plea deals had a stipulation that if the defendant was arrested again for the same or similar offense they would be incarcerated and the original charges reinstated.  You folks do understand that no one is above the law but the charges can be reduced if agreed upon, right?

Nonsense. Prosecutors know that it's extremely difficult to get a conviction on tax fraud. Not only do they have to prove that it was done knowingly- no so easy when the defendant had an out-of-control crack cocaine addiction - but they also know it's hard to get juries to convict when the government has already been repaid. They're going to ask where's the harm?

As for the gun charges, prosecution for that offense are very rare. What would have made it especially difficult for prosecutors is that Biden sought treatment for his addiction. Again, juries, are going to ask where's the harm?

Ahhh his offense was paying late…..he paid it btw also on the gun issue he denied his drug use that was the offense the republicans have been hounding the sole surviving son of our president for 5 full years this is the end result of 5 years of harassment but hey I guess a bare dry bone is better than nothing ehhh?

More denial of reality. The prosecutor in charge of the case was appointed by Trump. He was one of the few prosecutors the Biden administration kept on. He was promised independence in his investigation. Any proof that promise wasn't kept? Any proof of undue influence?

And many times part of the plea deal to avoid jail time is to attend more drug counseling courses and then show proof of completion.  One wonders if part of his plea deal was informal probation where he must deliver a urine sample when called upon to prove he is clean.  Seen it happen dozens of times,  no not the urine test but the informal probation.

Yes, let's just forget the various federal weapons felonies. Especially in a government where, just days ago, the President was calling for stricter gun control. Part of that strictness could be actually enforcing the laws already on the books!

I guess Joe Redneck shouldn't worry now. He can lie on a federal weapons acquisition application, illegally purchase a weapon, use illegal narcotics while brandishing said weapon (on film), cavort will human trafficed sex workers, then LOSE the weapon and not notify the police.   And not face any penalties.

It seems that the tax offenses occurred around 2017, approximately two years after his brother's death and while Hunter was a drug addict and while he didn't have daddy's money to pay for his coke habit and so failed to pay his taxes.

 

None of this matters to the rabid right but the justice system does recognize mitigating circumstances.

As has been pointed out numerous times, the feds rarely prosecute cases like this except where the gun was used in commission of a crime. Come back when you've got evidence that Biden brandished his gun while robbing a liquor store or mugging someone.

You keep on banging on about Felony, you do realize the charges being pled to were part of a plea deal, so they had been reduced to get him to plead guilty. You guys amaze me that you can only see it as a conspiracy and one sidedness. Was he convicted, yes he was by pleading to the reduced charges.  A win Win for both sides
