Verbal abuse of Singaporean tourist leads to Phuket van driver being fined 1,000 baht

In a show of justice for tourists in Phuket, a 47 year old van driver who verbally abused a tourist last Sunday has been legally reprimanded. The driver was imposed with a fine of 1,000 baht by the local court for frightening others with the use of threat (intimidation).

 

In an online statement, Phuket Provincial Police revealed that the driver, Poramet, met his charge of causing terror by threats head-on and confessed in court. According to Section 78 of the Criminal Code, as relayed by the police, his straightforward confession helped him cut his sentence by half. However, it remains unclear whether the fine of 1,000 baht was imposed before or after this reduction in his punishment.

 

Interestingly, the police did not refer to Poramet by his name in their official statement, but simply as “Mr Boy,” claiming this was an intentional measure to avoid revealing his identity. The police statement reveals that Poramet had a verbal spat tussle with Faris Bin Abdulkadir, a 35 year old Singaporean tourist, on the bustling Ratsada Road in Phuket Town last Sunday. This altercation took place in front of a local coffee shop, reported The Phuket News.

 

Abdulkadir was travelling with 10 other passengers from the Pack-Up Hotel in Krabi to Phuket in Poramet’s van. Requesting a drop-off at the Grand Supicha City Hotel, where he had secured a reservation, Abdulkadir was met with Poramet’s refusal.

This is the same story as in this other thread where the driver tried to hit the tourist with an iron bar in the head. For some reason this fact has now disappeared from the story and no charges related to it were reported even though there is video evidence.

Swinging an Iron bar at someones head is a bit more than 'verbal abuse'... 

 

In yesterdays news...  (of the same incident) - link pasted below, the Driver swung an iron bar the Singaporean managed to 'dodge'... 

 

The 'incident' has been polished to allow the driver to get away with a more serious crime. Utterly useless policing, they are simply too lazy to file stronger charges.

Hardly a consolation, and we'll never hear anything about it, but the case has been referred to the Krabi Land transportation office.

I assume because that's where the driver got his public transport license from. Hope he will be suspended for a very long time but wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Did they learn anything?

It was a great opportunity for them to appreciate the tourists that they rely onto survive and fix a lot of problems with the system. Yet the moment tourists returned so did stories of overcharging at the airport.

Now we're back to getting attacked with iron bars.

Unfortunately the Thai justice system cannot be compared with the West. Crimes are judged entirely differently, with monetary compensation or social position being taken into consideration more than the effect on the victim. Standards of investigation are low and try to avoid court appearances.

At the VERY LEAST this driver should be arrested, fined (much more heavily), fired from his job, and blacklisted from working alone with the public. The man is obviously a menace to society. Going off into a tirade and threatening (or allegedly even taking a swing at someone's head) with an iron bar!? Regardless of whether or not that tourist said something offensive or not, this driver needs to go away and not come back.
Obviously, nothing remotely close to justice will happen. So unbelievably absurd that the article would say this pitiful 1,000 baht fine is a "show of justice for tourists"! OMG..... I think "justice" needs a redefinition for some people.

Yes, I'm all for avoiding the court system! Anyone with an iota of knowledge of what goes on in America knows all too well how insane that gets. But when somebody's life gets physically threatened... any society, I would think, should take that quite seriously. Docking somebody a days wage, or so, for such a egregious crime, surely couldn't appear reasonable to the average person, could it!??? Does anyone ever think how they'd feel about it if that were their mother being attacked? It appears not....

The Singapore guy should have paid the extra 100 baht. Or just got out if vehicle and walked.
