Climate change is making our oceans change color, new research finds

The color of the ocean has changed significantly over the last 20 years and human-caused climate change is likely responsible, according to a new study.

More than 56% of the world’s oceans have changed color to an extent that cannot be explained by natural variability, said a team of researchers, led by scientists from the National Oceanography Center in the UK and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, in a statement.

Tropical oceans close to the equator in particular have become greener in the past two decades, reflecting changes in their ecosystems, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

The color of the ocean is derived from the materials found in its upper layers. For example, a deep blue sea will have very little life in it, whereas a green color means there are ecosystems there, based on phytoplankton, plant-like microbes which contain chlorophyll. The phytoplankton form the basis of a food web which supports larger organisms such as krill, fish, seabirds and marine mammals

Any excuse scaremongering that there's a  man made climate change .

It's normal that it changes it's a Natural  Phenomenon .

Has climate change been happening for thousands of years? Yes and it will happen again and again.

Now still warming  and sometime later on ( We won't see that) it will cool down again then people can complain that it is Too Cold.

Earth's climate has changed throughout history. Just in the last 800,000 years, there have been eight cycles of ice ages and warmer periods, with the end of the last ice age about 11,700 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization.

Contrary to what you apparently believe, semantics is not a substitute for science. Yes, climate has always changed. But it's the rate of change that's an issue. And the average temperature of the atmosphere is rising at a rate that's unprecedented for 10s of thousands of  years.

Global Temperature Reconstruction Over Last 24,000 Years Show Today’s Warming “Unprecedented”

The study, published Wednesday (November 10, 2021) in Nature, has three main findings:

  • It verifies that the main drivers of climate change since the last ice age are rising greenhouse gas concentrations and the retreat of the ice sheets.
  • It suggests a general warming trend over the last 10,000 years, settling a decade-long debate the paleoclimatology community about whether this period trended warmer or cooler.
  • The magnitude and rate warming over the last 150 years far surpasses the magnitude and rate of changes over the last 24,000 years.

I'd imagine, with higher concentration of carbon in the atmosphere, there's higher sea-plantations growing to absorb it.

But they're clearly not absorbing all the increase. If they were, then the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere would remain stable.  Also, the PH of the oceans is getting lower. That's due to carbonic acid created by CO2 dissolved in the water. So plant life and phytoplankton aren't absorbing all the CO2 that gets dissolved in the oceans.

I would need to see non filtered photos to believe that crap.

The only way that your objection works is if there is some sort of purposeful attempt to deceive which wasn't detected by peer review or if the reviewers are complicit in some sort  of conspiracy. Those kind of allegations are the last resort of the willfully uninformed.

Therein lies the problem. Anthropomorphic climate change deniers just imagine the misinformation they peddle. Science and evidence are missing from the equation.

Water has no color, only the things in it do.

There were no environmental studies "10s of thousands of years ago" so it's all best guess.

Alien mind control affects people differently much like "the force" has more influence on the weak-minded. :wai:

Talk about setting up a straw man? Did you actually read the article?  Not once in the article did it refer to the color of water. (although if it did, you would have to be willfully ignorant not to get the point). Not once. . Whereas the color of the ocean is mentioned many times in the article.

"The color of the ocean has changed significantly over the last 20 years"

More than 56% of the world’s oceans have changed color"

Tropical oceans close to the equator in particular have become greener

The color of the ocean is derived from the materials whereas a green color means there are ecosystems there",

The researchers monitored changes in ocean color

They used data from the Aqua satellite which has been monitoring ocean color changes"

And by the way, water does have a color.

Water Color

"... water is in fact not colorless; even pure water is not colorless, but has a slight blue tint to it, best seen when looking through a long column of water. The blueness in water is not caused by the scattering of light, which is responsible for the sky being blue. Rather, water blueness comes from the water molecules absorbing the red end of the spectrum of visible light."
