GOP strategists say Trump’s rising legal problems could kneecap him against Biden

A new indictment of former President Trump in connection to his actions surrounding Jan. 6 could pose a real problem for his 2024 White House campaign as he faces potential criminal charges for the third time this year, some Republicans say.

Trump said Tuesday that he’s a target of a federal investigation, which generally signals an indictment is on the way.

His legal issues so far appear to have helped more than hurt him with GOP primary voters, but the piling up of legal cases could cause real problems in a general election, Republicans say. And that could lead to the reelection of President Biden, despite his troubles.

“It’s hard to think this does anything to improve his numbers in a general election,” said Brian Seitchik, a Republican strategist and former Trump campaign staffer. 

A Quinnipiac University poll conducted nearly two years after the riots at the Capitol found more than 60 percent of Americans believed Trump bore a lot or some responsibility for the events on Jan. 6. That includes many independent and moderate voters who Trump will need to win over from Biden next November.

There is no chance of that. 'Troubles' accelerate rapidly, and obviously, once you reach a certain age.

Trump is proof of that.  He's not nearly as good at covering up his crimes as he once was.

I think that Chris Christie is also a big thorn in Trump's back as well now. If he moves into second (currently in third) past DeSantis in NH it will be an all-out knock down fight.

The cure lies at the GOP candidate committees feet.

 

All they have to do is dump Trump, perhaps De Santis also, and run with a new candidate.

 

If they do not have the guts to do so then they will reap what they have sown.

 

The problem belongs to them alone.

 

They may win the next election or they may lose with a different candidate, I have no idea as my crystal ball is in dire need of a service.

 

IMHO however if they run with either Trump or De Santis they will most probably lose

His base loves that he is being oppressed by the deep state.

 

He can claim victim-hood.

 

He can forestall trials until after the election.

 

If he wins he'll pardon himself, and get HIS DOJ/OLC to write an opinion that the DOJ can never prosecute anyone named trump.

 

If he loses he will claim he won, and is still president. Although that would be a third term? Yes? No? SCOTUS says "No".

 

No downside to any criminal/civil charges. In fact, the more the merrier.

Yes, his base will be there supporting him. The problem he has is that his base is too small to get elected.

Of course. That's why the charges were brought.

 

The fact that he will likely be exonerated after the election will not matter if Biden has already won. Same as Hunter's laptop, as long as the truth remained buried until after the election it was job done as far as the Democrats were concerned. 

 

Politically motivated. Dirty, but often effective. If Biden is re-elected the USA will be the ultimate loser.

By that logic, Trump could totally screw up the Democrats' evil plans by working to bring his cases to trial as soon as possible.  I wonder why he isn't doing that.????
