Phuket officials working on plans to ease dependence on tourism

Phuket is hoping to ease its heavy reliance on tourism, with local officials hatching plans for a “New Economy” for the island. The Bangkok Post reports that deputy governor Amnuay Pinsuwan has spoken of a “10+ Pillars” plan, which considers all aspects that can improve the island’s economy.

The writer, anecdotally, suggests that 95% of Phuket’s economy is either directly, or indirectly, linked to tourism.

These could include gastronomy, education, medical and wellness, SMEs and Phuket’s status as a maritime destination. Others factors included in the plan are sports, tourism, fisheries and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions) activity support.

Rubber?

Pineapples?

Richest per capita province in Thailand.

That would mean hard work, meaning import of cheap labour.

Funny that. I thought the Thai 'government' and its TAT arm were focussed on increasing the number of tourists this year back to 30 million, nay let's head to 100 mil ...

Easy money always beats hard work in this country.

So a holiday island minus the tourist just leaves  an empty broke, poverty stricken rural landscape. Sometimes I just shake my head at their stupidity. How about investing in the one industry making in safer and enjoyable for both Thai and foreigners so they tell their friend and come back? However, the mentality of screwing every satang and ripping off, assaulting and scamming as much as you can with the mentality of so what there is more until you find out your reputation has stopped millions from coming.

Whatever happened to their plan yonks ago to turn Phuket into an IT hub to rival Singapore?  (Rhetorical question...)

Awaiting the answer from the ' committee '  they formed.

It is expected to reach a decision around 2050.

They realized that IT professionals usually need a proper education.
