Donald Trump confirms he will skip Republican presidential debates

Donald Trump has confirmed that he will not take part in Republican presidential debates with his rivals in the race for the White House.

The ex-president said one latest poll showed he had "legendary" numbers ahead of other hopefuls to be the party's nominee for the 2024 election.

"The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had," Mr Trump, 77, wrote in a post on social media.

The first Republican presidential primary debate will be on 23 August.

The second debate can possibly follow the next day. At least two more debates are expected in the ensuing months.

Voting in the Republican primary election begins in the state of Iowa on 15 January 2024, but more debates are likely to be held to help winnow the field.

 

Recent polls have consistently shown that Mr Trump - who faces a number of criminal charges - is currently the frontrunner for the Republican nomination.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Mr Trump wrote: "New CBS POLL, just out, has me leading the field by "legendary" numbers."

He added that several other contenders - including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis - were lagging far behind.

"The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had, with Energy Independence, Strong Borders & Military, Biggest EVER Tax & Regulation Cuts, No Inflation, Strongest Economy in History, & much more.

Considering the last election's Rep debates, they are a bit of joke.  Basically all questions were either to him, or about him.  Pointed out a few times times during those debates.

 

Debate opens and they state your policies, then a giant bash fest, only good for TV ratings.  All quite embarrassing really.  

 

Only an idiot would watch them again, and sadly, too many millions of those.

As for whether debates serve any purpose, think of it this way: in 2016 he gave a shout-out to his Russian friends ("if you're listening") and in 2020 he directly addressed the people who would have a starring role in 1/6.  Maybe this time he'll crash the party, just walk in unannounced and make the contestants mess their pants.  He'll do like in 2016, insult each of them one by one down the line.

That's highly debatable.  Quite a few independents/moderates abandoned Trump in 2020.  And now that he's an indicted felon, you think they're going to come back to him?  That bridge was burned long ago.  Someone like Tim Scott or Chris Christie would certainly do better than Trump with independents/moderates.  The problem for the Republicans is no matter who they nominate that's not named Trump, a big chunk of their base will probably sit out the 2024 elections.  Which is a shame as I think someone like Scott or Christie might be more of a unifier for the country.

Some on the right are already suggesting that by Trump skipping the primary debate(s), Joe Biden can certainly do the same when the general election comes around.

 

[According to The New York Times over the weekend, Republican National Committee (RNC) chairwoman Ronna McDaniel reportedly warned Trump that by skipping the debate he could give Biden an excuse to get out of debating him should they face one another again on the ticket in 2024.]

Not according to the polls which everyone here loves so much (as long as they're favourable).

Not sure if you've noticed but his indictments are strengthening him.  Why?  Because so many see the indictments as political persecution and election interference.

The bridge has not been burned.  People are still crossing over.  To Trump.  That includes independents, blacks and Hispanics.  You can deny that if you wish.  Even the MSM has admitted the fact.  To their chagrin, I might add.

Christie is joke.  I don't know how else to put it.  Emerson College has him at 9%.  Do you understand how weak that is?  Why?  Because he's a joke, a RINO, a globalist, and a political parasite.  What more reasons does one need?
