The Running Of The Bulls... It's Soooooo Tragic...

Featured Replies

Farangsay, the bulls in the arenas are actually cows and they're vicious little mothers, ready to tackle anyone fool enough to face them.

If Weho's talking about them, he can stop worrying; I've seen the procession of injured heroes limping from the clinic after a "taureau a la piscine" event but never an injured cow.

I note that the OP offers no source or substance whatsoever for his assertions.

This "event" happened where , in which country ?

I do not approve of the Spanish bullfight thing where a matador demonstrates his "courage" by giving the coup de grace to a bull who can no longer lift his head after repeated stabbings in his neck by picadors.

It was in Pamplona, Spain.

Most of the bulls that ran were killed that same evening in the ring, but at least they went down fighting.

Great article, with nice pictures of the gorings. Those cretins got what they deserved, maybe they deserved even more. I hope the rest of their lives that they spend in a wheelchair will be fulfilling, since they engaged in such a "cultural" festival. Wow, brave men.

And the OP didn't feel it was necessary to state the location where the "running of the bulls" takes place. If you don't already know, then you should have stopped reading. and odd that farangsay made that complaint, and then asked, as indicated above "in which country?", then he/she goes on to inform us that he/she does "not approve of Spanish bullfight[ing]"... Puh-leese.

There must be a chinese proverb that covers that kind of posting.

I didn't actually mean to be condescending , although I suppose I was stereotyping Americans a notoriously ignorant of everything beyond there shores that has not been "Disneyised" by Hollywood.

I find your expressions of glee at the injuries suffered by these individuals distasteful and disturbing. Do I detect signs of psychopathy ? Maybe you should consider "seeing someone". Preferably before this malignance erupts and you assault some 30kg Pattayan waitress for giving you bad service.

Distasteful and disturbing? Let's see, what's most distastful and disturbing: my desire to see animal abusers injured, OR the people that ACTUALLY round up, let loose bulls INSIDE a city, and then have them KILLED, in front of people that PAY to see the murder?

Now, what's really MORE distasteful and disturbing... me or them?

That's an easy one.

The answer is you.

Now try me on a tough one.

There are however other regions who celebrate the fighting bull in an admirable fashion.

I recently spent some time in the Camargue (southern France for those from Amerigay).

In that region they "run the bulls" and put on displays in the arenas.

The animal is never intentionally harmed because it is both respected and valuable.

Ignorance has invaded bedlam.

I hadn't hear the term "Amerigay" before, so I googled it. Seems it's a gay oriented tour agency based in WEst HOllywood, CA. They don't have any tour packages to the Camargue, but I note they get out to Palm Springs where one can view a running of the bull dykes and visit the Salton Sea, which at least is something, considering no one actually owns a passport .

Nice try, Sherlock.

And is your comedy about bull dykes your "A" material?

"Amerigay" is a term that was used in the early 90's on a popular radio show, when they felt the entire nation turned homosexual, and they renamed it "Amerigay".

And those people that pay to see murder, inside a bullring, or outside in a spanish city, who somehow have convinced themselves they are participating in "art", or "culture" or "tradition", should really try to have a more balanced and fair fight. If not, why not just go into the bullring with machine guns, and mow the bulls down with rapid fire bullets? what's with the "artistic" desire to see slow death?

Let's see some more of your "A" comedy material.

Touché ....... Pâté

Based on his anti-slaughter vitriole, I would assume Kimchee is a vegetarian. But, he loves Sizzler restauratns. I guess if you don't see an animal slaughtered in an abattoire, then it never really was slaughtered and the beef on the styrofoam tray is from a cow that just fell over and died with his family lowing softly around him. I do talk to my plants and offer up a prayer of thanks to the green things everytime I pluck a strawberry or a snow pea.

Oh dear, I fear that hockey, boxing and chuckwagon races are up next for attack. As a buckle bunny, whatever shall I do without my chuckies?

Who changed their prescription today? :o:D

JG I love to eat meat that has been humanely executed. I have no problem with that.

However I do have a problem with animals being put through a slow and painful death.

Thanks for posting that link... i'm much too delicate to actually WATCH the video clips, but I read the descriptions. I've changed my mind. I don't want so-called "bullfighters" simply injured, I wanted them in a wheelchair, FOR LIFE, with a sign hung round their neck that says "I used to be a bullfighter... ask me why I'm in a wheelchair".

How anyone could think of spending tourist money in Spain, Mexico or anywhere else that it's still legal, is beyond my comprehension. And the mainstream always portrays this "event" in Pamplona is some kind of exciting and fun event.

Thank you again for the link.

What's humane, Twinkies?

Here's a quote from a slaughterhouse worker:

"A lot of times the skinner finds a cow is still conscious when he slices the side of its head and it starts kicking wildly. If that happens, ... the skinner shoves a knife into the back of its head to cut the spinal cord." (This paralyzes the animal, but doesn't stop the pain of being skinned alive.) And still another, on calf slaughter: "To get done with them faster, we'd put eight or nine of them in the knocking box at a time... You start shooting, the calves are jumping, they're all piling up on top of each other. You don't know which ones got shot and which didn't... They're hung anyway, and down the line they go, wriggling and yelling"(to be slaughtered while fully conscious).

Oh, yes, I forgot the pigs being carted off to slaughter in Thailand, herded into metal cages on the back of a pickup truck, each cage hardly big enough for one pig, waiting in 35 degree sun and heat for the ferry or being whizzed away to the abattoire. Yep, that's pretty f* humane.

Weho, you say you dont understand people spending their tourist money in Spain, Mexico, or anywhere that bull sports are legal. Do you specifically mean spending tourist money on these events or really just in general?

If you mean in general, I have to say, it makes no sense. There are 'barbaric' sports the world over. Thailand having its fair share of them.

If you wish to do something constuctive regarding this, there are many sites which to can register with that offer advice. Some website even have very simple copy and paste statements which you can sign your name and location to and then send. This will be added to a list of names and sent to the relevant areas, showing your opposition. The same goes for sites regarding human rights. With all of these the level of effort can be minimal or more active, depending on what you feel you can offer. The problem is, most people choose to do nothing, except rant. I hope you are not one of them.

Jet Gordon>> Did you just link a vegan propaganda site and pretended it was facts posted?

Where did you get the link...wikipedia?

I wonder if they talk about animal abuse in Thailand on the Spanish forum.

Thinks: "Now there's a good topic for Weho's next thread"

What's humane, Twinkies?

Everybody has different definitions I suppose. Personally I don't think letting animals bleed to death in the ring or be skinned is alive in some dodgy slaughter house is.

I am sure that there are slaughter houses that do not comply with recognised best practices and what you described there is nothing short of barbaric. Let's hope that place got shut down.

As a well intentioned consumer one would hope that industry would adhere to government legislations or where they are not present, self regulation, to ensure that humane slaughter standards are met.

In the larger markets these slaughter houses are inspected by food safety officials but I doubt they are here, but then again a lot of product is shipped overseas so it may not be all that far fetched to believe that it happens here too.

How do you buy meat responsibly in Thailand though? Well I try to buy from large firms who are more likely to also ship product for export. Of course there are no guarantees its not like anything is written on the packaging here but its the best bet available, unless you do get lucky and the packaging says otherwise.

It is one of the reasons I prefer to buy imported beef from USA or Australia. Its more expensive and typically tastes a lot better but I also have some peace of mind from my purchase.

Always buying humanely slaughtered product obviously cant always be achieved in Thailand but I do what I can, which is all anyone can reasonably expect. So no doubt some of the critters we have eaten over the years have been offed in a less than satisfactory way, do I usually spare a thought for them? In truth no, but does that make inhumane slaughter acceptable, no it does not.

If given the choice I would always pick humanely slaughtered animals. I am not given a choice therefore I try to make the best possible choice with the information available to me. Its not perfect but I can live with that.

But back to the original topic, the slaughter of bulls for entertainment. This is on a whole new plateau of barbarism. I really would like to think that mankind has moved on a little since Roman times...

Lets forget about the bulls for a moment.

Has anybody been to a cock fight in Thailand & if so, how did that make you feel?

Lets forget about the bulls for a moment.
