The recent dinner party murder of a local highway policeman in Nakhon Pathom province has placed local power structures in Thailand under intense national focus.

Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul recently addressed the issue of cracking down on criminal organizations. He also cautioned against phrases like “subduing mafia” and wording that overly narrows the scope of the crackdown to just organized criminal elements, stressing that the matter is not only about reining in individuals with local influence who break the law and intimidate residents.

Recognizing there are many wrongdoers, Minister Anutin said strict punitive measures and preventative steps would be adopted to curb unlawful activities.

What's the phrase, I think the one that best describes this announcement is 'more piss and wind' I doubt the local 'influential' people are quaking in their boots....

"Ok everybody run around, look busy, ask alot of questions, set somebody up, take photos, dont smile at the cameras, stand rigidly to attention hands clasped at your side.  The media will only be around a day or two till its all quickly forgotten and then we can get back to our 'collections'."

It's odd how they deal with organized crime here.

Kid gloves, and euphemisms like "scrutinize" (crack-down) and "influential figures" (mafia, gangsters).

And it's like this problem, mafia, corruption of the police, just popped up last week. Who knew?

A quick reminder that Thailand is all but a 3rd world country. Criminals are in this country from top to bottom. There are much, much bigger players than what this article is focussing on.

Pattaya  has been run by one family for years. At present one member, a former mayor has run to Cambodia to escape prosecution.. This control has been going on for generations so it is hard to estimate the enormity of the money that has been siphoned off.

Shouldn't be that difficult. Just ask Chuwit. He knows everybody who is anybody in this business. And I'm sure he would spill a few names in confidence.

But this will, of course, never happen.... time to wake up!
