Storm Hits Sriracha, Large Gas Station Sign Crushes Customer's Car, kills 1 person

In Sriracha, a powerful storm wreaked havoc as it toppled a massive gas station sign onto a coffee shop, a noodle restaurant, and a convenience store. A young man had pulled in to refuel when fate intervened, and he narrowly escaped disaster.

 

On September 20, 2023, at 4:30 PM, the Sriracha Police Department received distressing news of a large gas station sign collapsing onto a coffee shop and several cars, reported Thai Rath.

 

Tragically, there were casualties and injuries inside the gas station. The incident occurred at a PTT gas station branch in Sriracha, located on Sukhumvit Road, Sriracha District, Chonburi Province. Emergency responders, along with the Sriracha Rescue Unit, rushed to the scene.

 

At the accident site, a large gas station sign had fallen onto the coffee shop and a noodle restaurant, causing extensive damage. Nearby, an Isuzu pickup truck with license plate number 5967 Sukhothai was crushed by the fallen sign. The driver, Mr. Sawat Manoi, 65 years old, was unconscious and suffered severe injuries. Despite rescue efforts, Mr. Sawat succumbed to his injuries. Additionally, a customer who sought shelter from the rain inside the convenience store sustained injuries.

 

According to gas station employees, the incident occurred following heavy rainfall and strong gusts of wind. The gusty winds caused the large gas station sign to break and fall, narrowly missing a tragic outcome. Authorities are conducting a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Yes, that would be the strong winds and lightening strikes I got South of Laem Chabang about that time..... the thunderstorms here still make me nervous, had a lightening strike hit my garden some years ago.

So Mr. Sawat Manoi's death wasn't a tragic outcome ?

Tragedy struck in Sri Racha district, Chon Buri province, after thunder and lightning struck an enormous advertising sign at a PTT petrol station, causing it to collapse and kill a pickup driver.

 

Officers at Sri Racha police station were notified of the sign collapse at around 4.30pm yesterday, September 20. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the advertising sign lay over a coffee shop, a noodle shop, a grocery store and the bronze Isuzu pickup truck with registration number บบ 5967.

 

The pickup driver, 65 year old Sawart Manoi, was trapped inside the damaged vehicle. He lost consciousness and sustained several injuries. The Sawang Prateep rescue team rushed to the scene to rescue Sawart from the wreckage but was unable to save his life. Sawart was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another victim, who had used the petrol station as a shelter from the rain, suffered minor injuries. Rescuers administered first aid to the victim before taking him to the hospital for a thorough assessment of his condition.

Wind loading?? What's that?

Thailand often gets strong winds..mostly gusts...but such a structure must should not blow down! 

PTT never the less, will very likely not be liable...they're far too big...except maybe for nominal payment in compensation.

You see these large PTT signs all over.  I hope they all aren't this very poorly constructed.

They make these signs Way to big and without the proper structure to support it when a big storm hits. This is just the latest example of it happening. We’ve seen it happen many times before.

Thailand is not the only country where these big structures get blown down. I have seen these

structures blown down or away in the USA and Canada  as well, likely it happens all over the world

if the winds are strong enough. Here on the forum though, there are lots of arm chair experts

who think these things are built too weak.

A voice of reason, I've seen these gas station signs blown over in Texas after hurricanes, quite common in fact
