If You're Going To Tell A Lie, Make It A Big One.

Featured Replies

So said the father of modern politics and those that make a living out of deceiving us have used it as a mantra ever since.

But should we be surprised? Should we be disgusted or shocked when people lie to us?

They say that money makes the world go round, but surely it is lies that really keep it moving.

Lies are everything and everywhere, big and small, they are the small change of language that keep the harsh reality form our minds

and the big fakes that can help us buy our way into the comfort zone.

Lies are politically correct, you can call it 'spin' to make you feel more comfortable about it.

Telling a lie is making a gamble, where the stake must be proportionate to the outcome to make it worthwhile.

If someone is malicious or easily seen through with their lies,

do we condemn them because they lied or because they were so disingenious with the way they lied?

If someone makes a lie that is big and the reward reflects the effort, do we condemn them because they lied or are we envious of the gamble they took and won?

The truth is overated, when I was a child I was punished if I lied, even if the reason for lying was the fear of getting punished,

but as I grew up I realised that not only was my family built on lies, but my friends families and everything in the world in which we live.

My belief in telling the truth, drummed into me as a kid, has done nothing to enamour me to the majority of people (sheep)I have met through the years,

who generally aren't interested in the truth because it makes them uncomfortable.

The energy my parents expended on punishing me would have been better spent teaching me to be a more skillful liar,

at least it would have given me a better head start in the world.

If politics are lies and lies are politics and this is the definition of politics;

a. to engage in intrigue, take advantage of a situation or issue, resort to partisan politics, etc.; exploit a system or relationships.

b. to deal with people in an opportunistic, manipulative, or devious way, as for job advancement.

Then surely lies are part of all our lives.

In fact lies are our lives as surely as the collection of cells that we are, can make us believe that the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.

And so to my point, we have all lied at some time or perhaps even continually to our advantage or our detriment. Discuss.

I think your entire post is riddled with porkies.

Shame on you !

I think it's called being a good salesperson, Robski, dear. I sucked at sales. However, after living in Thailand and Asia general for so long, I can say "everything is fine" when in fact everything is <deleted>, without blinking an eyelash.

Oh, I love it when you get down and dirty.

There are other options besides participating in schemes built on lies, or being honest to one's own detriment. You can choose to keep your mouth shut and go your own way. If others are persuaded by your actions than you have shone a light on the deception and stayed true to yourself. IMO that's about as much as one man can do. I've seen others who try to rally folks against these practices, but ultimately they're defined by what they're against rather than what they are for.

But we have all lied or lived a lie at some time. As sure as breathing, you'd be lieing if you said you hadn't that's how ingrained lies are in our life.

Lets discuss lies and try probably unsucsessfully to understand it, or we can compare lies that we've told and have a good laugh at each other or

see if you can try and make a bl00dy big lie to our fellow members and try to get away with it. Up to you.

Choose to ask god/great spirit. This is all that is required. Just pray, talk to the air, and know the air is listening.

Robski,

An interesting and thought-provoking post. And as a nouveau arriviste, I thought this forum was all about light-hearted banter, golden showers and spank-a-thons....silly me. :o

The reason I left my corporate job (Fortune 500) was that I just became absolutely fed up with what you term lying.

Other people say "politics".

Others state it is the grease that oils the wheels of commerce.

All the studies I've read (which I cannot quote off the top of my head) say that the average person dissembles, misleads or outright lies multiple times a day. It is simply a coping mechanism.

To be Perfectly Blunt, and always tell (what you consider to be) the Absolute Truth, always, would endear you to no one, and would earn you the title "Mr. As*hole".

Respectfully Yours,

Mr. As*hole (just kidding!)

That could be a bit of a challenge in a thread about lies , even if you kept a straight face.

You been drinking again Rob or are you intellectually challenged this weather ?

All true. It works both ways though. I lied in a recent post, giving an insincere apology to a drunken ######. Lying doesn't just oil the wheels of commerce but polite society as well.

Point of order. An insincere apology is NOT a lie. Sarcasm and irony come to mind.

I'm sorry (NOT) to be such a nitpicker.

Or perhaps disingenuous, which probably isn't lying either. So, I'll give myself a karma credit on that one, which I'm sure I'll need to cash, in the not too distant future.

"disingenuous" is the word that the UK parliament uses! As you cannot say of a fellow mp that they used a lie! Means the same thing though!

Lies have their place just like everything else. Take for example the idea of expedient means in Buddhism. Found in the Lotus Sutta, if I remember correctly, there is a story about a father trying to get his kids out of their burning home. The children don't believe the house is on fire and thus stay inside. The father knows that the house is and needs to get them out. He sees them playing with their toy chariots and promises them that if the come outside they would find real chariots and real horses that they couold play with. Of course they come out.

Now, the father lied, but it was to get the kids out of danger. So, was this a real bad thing? This stroy is used in Mahayana Buddhism mostly to suggest that getting someone on the path of enlightenment by any means is acceptable. For the burning house was life and outside was Nirvana. So, even lies have their place.

So does "being economical with the truth"

I have always held the belief that anyone who wants to be a politician should be the last person allowed to be. Give the job to someone who doesn't want it and stands to gain nothing from it, probably get a much better job done.

Nah ..... never happen.

and here's me thinking the rules are to keep 'em as close to the truth as possible ........................

morning all , how are we ??

Who'd have thought I'd be cashing in my karmic credit so soon. Out today with the girlfriend at my favorite home improvement store. At the next table sits a lovely young thing (on break from promoting something) all dressed in white, wearing 1/2 a vinyl blouse, 1/3 of a vinyl skirt, and 6" or higher heels on her vinyl gogo boots. gf: Oh my godness! Do you see that?" me: "see what?". gf: "that girl, she looks like a hooooker. oh my godness." me: "Oh, I hadn't noticed, that's terrible isn't it?" gf: "her poor family" . That probably wouldn't be classified as a "virtuous lie".

In summary: lying = diplomacy = peace

"Ahh, your BED is as soft as a LAM(:o" said Jet to me , as she was really coming on to me that night, remember Jet? Problem was my bed was as hard as I was. Is that why you hang out here in BED-LAM(:D?:D

Know you can make that lie a BIG one, Jet!

I'm too stupid to lie. I've tried lying to my friends before, but always end-up being caught and sentenced to buy rounds of drinks. I stick to the truth now, if not,,,,,,, truthful!

If you are going to lie, you certainly need a good memory!

George: Jerry, just remember, it's not a lie if you believe it.

If you intend to lie, make sure you have a good memory.

And if you must tell the truth, always be sure to have your car directly outside the door with the motor running.

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. If you have circumstances in your life that are unusual, often people are disbelieving. Its easier to just not talk about your life in much detail. Many people are a weird bunch, who try to pick holes and try to catch you out if they find some things youve done a bit beyond their thinking.

Telling small white lies to make life easier (such as "oh sorry, i cannot go to a bible meeting with you as i have another important engagement" !! :o) is fine imo. But, in general, I think there is no point in telling lies, better to just not say much at all, for that way you hopefully avoid peoples stupid speculations.

I heard Kayo claiming he was not responsible for everything going wrong on another thread.

What a porker !!!!
