Then it started. Should have gone to another restaurant instead of trying to force his ways on other people.

I stayed 3 months in Kata Beach last year to visit my Thai and foreign friends. I lived there 20 years in the 80s till 2000. There was a Russian girl at the pool who blasted Russian music . One man asked her to put it off. She turned her head and ignored him. In a restaurant I used to go to in the past years, full of pushy Russians, sitting down where they want and shouting for their order, kids everywhere playing and running. They run their own businesses, private taxi runs, travel agencies, restaurants and probably online business too. They’ve bought up all the cheaper condos that they rent to family and friends , whole condos are mostly Russian, not forgetting the richer ones who buy the villas pushing up the prices even further. The same as happened in Bali. Because of them many foreign tourists will never come back. Pattaya , mostly Jomtien , will soon be in the same spot, there are far more choice of high rise condos in Jomtien for example than in Phuket. I left my condo behind the night market in Jomtien because of them , fortunately I have found one much more private which the owners will never rent/sell to Russians or Chinese .

I get what you're saying.

If I go to an "ethnic" restaurant features of that ethnicity there besides the food are a feature, not a bug.

On the other hand, perhaps the issue is the surprise about the decent dominance of the Russkie brigade in that area.

I remember during previous Russian boom times in Pattaya, the baht bus drivers started to speak in Russian, not English.

I have friends who know younger Russians. And they say they are kind, friendly and progressive. I have no idea what percentage of the population these younger people represent, nor how representative they are of the Russian population. Personally, I have met very few friendly Russians. Anywhere in the world. The vast majority of Russians I have met, seem to have very, very few redeeming qualities. It is no wonder.

I can only speak from my experience. Have run into alot of Russians both in the US, and on Phuket and Samui, 98% of them seem to be grumpy, unfriendly and gruff. Some of them are downright hostile. Likely a reflection of a very, very rough culture and environment. So, perhaps it is not a coincidence that the world is not standing up to support them and show them kindness? Just an observation.

I do not think it is a sense of entitlement. I think it is a reflection of the current culture. It was destroyed over a century of callous and murderous leadership. Stalin, Lenin, Khruschev, now Putin. They have become somewhat savage and crude. No grace, no finesse, no courtesy. Rather uncivilized. My family was from Russia a few generations back. I used to ask my great-grandmother when she was still around, why they didn't teach us anything about the old country. She would give me this look, and tell me "the reason we never teach you about the place we came from, is because the place we came from was the most horrific country on earth, it was the most destitute, horrible, oppressive place and we were thrilled to finally get out of there and leave it behind. That's why we don't teach you about the old country, the old country doesn't exist for us.

 

Some observations on why Russians seem to be so grumpy, annoying and unhappy:

Not strange.  The West has declared Open Season on all Russians.  If you hail from a Western country, you're suppose to fall in line and hate Russians, Russian ethnicity, Russian history and Russia culture.  That includes calling Russian businesses "racists."

Unfortunately, racism has existed for centuries, albeit it been reduced (or on a low key) now, it still exists every where on this planet.

 

It's just that when you, a family member or a colleague experience it first hand, that we start condemning it vociferously.

 

Calling Thai people racists, is very strange (comparatively) and never heard of Russians on this count before.
