Other than Biden, Dems can't put a white guy at the top of the ticket without losing huge swathes of the black vote, which is already at risk because they're snapping to the fact that they're getting the shortest end of the immigration fiasco.  Michelle could be a decoy, get elected, then step down and hand it over to Newsom.

 

Edit:  I'd point out that the benefit to Newsom is that he could serve more than 2 terms.  That would appeal to him...

Republicans actually performed slightly worse in the recall election with Larry Elder a black Californian being the leading opponent to Newsom, than they did in the subsequent regularly scheduled election.
