How Language affects Design, Thinking , and decision making.

Featured Replies

I Just watched this video on Youtube

I found it to be very interesting , informative, and IMO entertaining.

I will not say much about it because I don't want to affect the mindset with which you niew this, I want you to form your own conclusions .

The video analyzes eastern language and thinking and how it affects design and decision making.

For instance  The German word for vacuum cleaner "Staubsauger "translates to dust sucker where the Turkish word for vacuum  cleaner "elektrikli süpürge " which translates to Electric broom..

Ask a person to design a dust succker and another to design a electric broom and you can see how you could end up with two different designs. But the video touch into a lot of different subjects , such as individualism as compared  to collectivism, as a result of language or if you like , resulting in language that in turn affects decision making and culture.

The reason that I am bringing this up and posting the video, is that IMO it is and important thing to understand one's self, but is Doubly  important for us who are married Asian women and interact with Asian people to understand their mind set.

Anyway, if nothing else it was an interesting and entertaining  video IMO . Also I was a bit humbled by this young man's intellect . when thinking where my development was when I was his age.

Eastern & Western Design: How Culture Rewires The Brain

Thanks for the video.

It's rather long and I saw only about half of it. And it is definitely interesting.

I.e. the design of websites. Until now I thought sometimes that some of those Chinese websites are just horribly designed. But it seems they do it on purpose because that is what people who use them mostly like.
