Cybercrime investigators have arrested a woman who owned a mule bank account used by an online scam gang to receive payments from victims.

The suspect, identified as Dokkaew Kaewjerm, was arrested in connection with the death of Athiya Chuaykong, of Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

Athiya hanged herself in her bedroom on October 15, leaving a suicide note saying that she had been tricked by the gang into making a down payment of Bt18,500 to purchase an iPhone 13 from a mobile phone shop in Thailand’s northern border province of Chiang Rai.

Glad she was arrested. The poor girl must have felt horrible and lost her life due to this. Very sad.

Mule bank account owners are as guilty as the scammers.

And all for just 300 baht. Unbelievable.

She claimed that she had nothing to do with the gang and that she was paid Bt300 to open the account in question.

The banks must warn about the consequences they will face whoever comes to open accounts. Should make a small note and hand out together with their account book.

They are going to have to make an example of the mules to get the message across.  Can she claim she doesn't watch the dramatized Thai news everyday, where this and old phone scams feature at least once a day? I doubt it...

Big billboard warning in the banks would also be a good idea, but again would they take any notice if the news and social media on the issue doesn't get through?

If she cooperates and names names, give her a minimal lenient non custodial sentence. But what protection will she have if she sings?

Not defending the criminals, but to kill yourself over being scammed for 18k...too sensitive for this world unfortunately.

Insensitive so-and-so.  She was not just scammed out of B18k of her own money, she was scammed out of B18k that she had to borrow from a lender and friends.

Still, I'm quite sad that it ended this way and her morals are quite commendable. Unlike most people she actually did care about disappointing her friend and family. But still, taking her own life about such a minor mishap shows that this world is too harsh for the poor lady.

Probably a waste of time. She is a dumb woman who will know nothing. The real culprits will be a Chinese gang over  the border in Laos.
