Taxi, tuk-tuk drivers rally in Patong to protest “baht bus” plans

Well, of course they will protest. Phuket’s taxi cabals have long protected the gangs and rackets that have trashed the island’s transport reputation for decades. This latest proposal for some competition is no different.

 

Phuket taxi and tuk-tuk drivers are protesting against plans for a new “baht bus” circular service for Patong. The Phuket News reports that around 50 drivers gathered at the Patong Municipality officers on Monday, October 31.

 

They were met by Patong Mayor, Chalermsak Maneesri, and Move Forward MP, Chalermpong Saengdee, along with a number of officials from Patong City Council. Standing by were officers from Patong Police.

Good that they protest. As long as they only protest nobody gets hurt.

I don't want to think about the "health issues" for drivers of baht busses in the future. What will the tuk tuk mafia do if suddenly 90% of their previous customers will use baht busses? Somehow I don't imagine they will give up without fighting - and not with words...

I did post when this 1st appeared and it won't take long before the Tukkie Taxi starts threatening and intimidating baht bus drivers. Wait in a few weeks the next report will be Taxi and Tuk Tuk drivers are blocking roads to prevent tourists's getting on the Baht bus.

Because I can't imagine it was a local official from that area. They know that some things can't be touched.

and as far as im aware english taxi drivers dont mug, assault, harass and rip off their customers on a regular basis. There are laws.

Tuk Tuk and taxi cheats in Thailand are amongst those who harm tourism. A foreigner getting cheated in Thailand will obviously mention the fact all over social media once he is out of the country usually. In today's world information spreads fast. The government must crack down on all the taxi and tuk tuk cheats who refuse the meter. The government must..must impose all tuk tuks to have a meter and only charge by that. If not, tourism will continue to suffer with people cheating all over Thailand in the transport business.

I remember reading the news a couple years ago, when last time they established a bus service. The bus drivers were beaten up by the thugs, which ended the bus service very quickly. I presume that this was not just a protest, but also a 'warning' to any potential drivers...

Very true Sir...and it's always just so pathetic to hear and see foreigners moaning and accepting to pay the cheating prices on the pretext that it costs less back home or there or elsewhere. You do not compare with prices back in farang homeland. You compare to what is comparable, in Thailand, on considering local spending power, salaries etc. Often it those mindless tourists or foreigners just payin'up who also create inflation. Not saying to argue, last thing to do with a taxi-tuk tuk criminal.

 

If feeling scamed, better to just smile, say No politely and walk away...and use public transport, skytrain, Bolt or Uber depending in which country or region you are.
