On November 1st, 2023, local police arrested Mr. Chaiwin (full name withheld), 41, from Satun Province, after he brutally murdered his mother by striking her three times with the handle of a hammer earlier that day.

After committing the heinous act, Chaiwin fled and was later found at a resort in La-ngu district, where he had consumed a bottle of beer and inhaled glue, a known addictive substance. In his possession was a sum of 1,050 baht, believed to be stolen from his mother, which he had partly used to pay for the resort room and the beer, reported Siam Rath.

Historical records indicate Chaiwin has a criminal background, having previously been incarcerated for drug offenses and theft. He had also reportedly set fire to a mosque and a house in the past.

The victim, a rubber plantation owner, was known to hire workers and had some savings. The deceased's younger brother, Mr. Sola (full name withheld), 67, expressed shock upon hearing the news, mentioning that Chaiwin wanted money and was known to boast about having cash after the incident. Such a horrendous act, especially against one's parents, is unprecedented in this Muslim-majority community.

Under the influence, Chaiwin confessed to the crime, stating he had an altercation with his mother, accusing her of serving him something unpleasant. He also expressed a wish to be executed. The police have charged him with murder, illicit drug use, and inhaling intoxicants.
