Myanmar military using foreigners including Thais as human shields

Myanmar’s military junta has used foreigners including Thais as human shields in northeastern Shan State, where fighting the junta and an ethnic alliance is escalating, according to The Irrawaddy online.

 

Instead of sending them back to their respective countries, the junta’s anti-human trafficking unit sent them to military camps, the online quoted a humanitarian worker as saying. Apart from Thais, other foreign nationals were those from Nepal, Ethiopia and Laos.

 

“The army is using them as forced labor to build bunkers, dig trenches, and carry timber. They are practically human shields.”

Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing has been accused before the International Criminal Court (ICC) of committing crimes against humanity for overseeing, as army chief, a deadly crackdown on protesters and activists opposed to the February 1 coup.

In a submission on Friday, the Myanmar Accountability Project (MAP) urged The Hague tribunal to open a criminal investigation “into the widespread and systematic use of torture as part of the violent crackdown against the protest movement” in the Southeast Asian country.

Just might be that the Burmese generals are about to lose this war, unless they bring in Chinese troops (although I do wonder if the Chinese might be supporting both sides, just in case). Then, what will Thailand do with a Burmese government on its border that Thailand conspired against? Thailand picking the losing side again?

From reports coming out of Burma the Rabel forces, for the want of a better name, have taken control of 25 army bases in the eastern border region, bordering China, and are gaining ground in the north, too.

With respect, not just military bases but the important cross-border trading city of Chinshwehaw at the Chinese border.

More than a quarter of Myanmar’s $1.8bn border trade with China passed through Chinshwehaw from April to September........ coalition of three ethnic rebel groups known as the Brotherhood Alliance – the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, the Arakan Army and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA)................they said they have taken over several military posts and key roads linking Myanmar with China.

I think the Burmese generals government could collapse almost instantly. People should be preparing now for what will be needed after it falls.

The Myanmar government is supported by 2 great allies , China and Russia .

I hope it falls ( fails ) as soon as possible , but it might be a bit early to prepare for what happens after the rebel's victory .

If there would be a revolution from inside the army , the ugly Mr. Hling monster would not last long . But he commands his army with an ' iron fist ' , deserting soldiers will be tortured or executed .

China and Russia both see a geopolitical ( and financial ) advantage in supporting the junta .

Indeed. And so I hope other powers are at least clandestinely opposing the generals. Turning over the Burmese government could change everything in the region and put China on its heels.
