Hello all,

Approximately how much will cost to go from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Shangri-la Hotel in Silom via metered taxi?? What would be the best or fastest way there?? I will be arriving either 5pm or 1am.

I once got a metered taxi to Shangri-la and the driver kept driving in circles around the airport and drove ridiculously slow. I then got upset and started argueing with the driver to take me back to the airport. The driver could not speak much english but he understood that I was upset and wanted to go back to the airport. He then called someone that could speak english, and I explained to that person what was going on. Long story short, I agreed to pay a fixed rate of 500baht. After I agreed to pay the fixed rate, the taxi driver only then started to pick up speed and drive with the flow of traffic.

Thanks in advance.

I live at State Tower the condo across from the Shangri-la and it normally costs about 350baht including Tolls and the extra 50 baht surcharge. For quicker service go upstairs to departures and as the taxi's are dropping off people just wave one down. They will be happy to take you as they don't have to queue up downstairs and neither will you and save 50 baht to boot! Never a problem!!

If your stopping at the Shangri La why not take a limo?

Cheers

They will charge 1000 baht minimum.

When you get in the cab just tell him Shangri-la, make sure the meter is at 35, as they leave it running while they wait in line. Tell him 'highway'. Price is around 275 baht + 50 airport and additional highway (depends on time, sometimes 60)= 375.

If they drive you around, just get their number and remember the color of the cab, ie the company. Then report to concierge when you get there...

I've never had problems catching a taxi on the upstairs departures level drop off area and all are willing to use the meter. Fare from Suwanna to Sukhumvit soi 15 is about baht 200 plus highway tolls of 65.

Another thing I do right after getting into the taxi is to copy the taxi number into my phone's phonebook. For the thai characters, I just use whichever alphabet looks closest to the thai character (usually something like a n, u, or w) - into the name slot - and then the 4 numeric digits - into the phone number slot. The taxi license number is on the yellow plate affixed on the interior of the rear door sill. That way, I would have the license number of the last taxi I rode in BKK in my phone, in case I left something in the taxi or need to report the taxi to the police. With each new taxi, I just edit the old name and number with the new one.

If you are not in a hurry then follow the advice of previous posters. If you are wanting a stress free trip to the hotel (I would if I was staying at the Shang) then take a Limo.

They give you a flat rate and a printed reciept with all the details of your trip on it, driver, car, number and money paid. The fee includes all tollway charges (about 70 baht to your hotel) and it is in a new Toyota Camry or Nissan Teana. Price is about 800 (depends on distance from airport).

Yes, it is about double the price of a cab but compared to what any of us paid at the other end of the flight it is a bargain. That's my justification for taking it when I just want an easy time with no hassle. It also makes me feel safer to sit in a proper car with a seatbelt in the back with the knowledge that all the mechanical parts are in good working order. The drivers nearly all speak a bit of English and are very service minded (ie trying to earn a tip) Well worth the extra 10 dollars in my mind. That's not to say that if I'm feeling perky after my trip I'll head upstairs and jump in a passing cab and save myself the 50 baht surcharge ....WooHoo!

Just a word to the wise.

The airport taxi mafia has recently sizably increased its presence on the departures level and grabbing a taxi there is not as problem-free as previously. However, a quick recce from even the less-experienced eye will be able to spot these criminals, particularly if you know what to look for. They will be parked, often in the best spot, directly outside the doors. They will be immune to the loud "shouting car" from the AoT which goes around 'shouting' at the taxis to leave promptly and use their indicators. They will be over-friendly and have far too many questions. Their manner will not tally with that of ordinary Thais doing ordinary service jobs. They will avoid any discussion of the meter.

It is best to go for taxis who are actually dropping somebody off thereby increasing your chances of avoiding professional airport passenger scammers.

Of course the next natural step for the mafia is to intimidate the ordinary taxi drivers into not taking any fares from the airport as they did with some success at the old Don Meuang. Let's hope that step is a long time coming.

Indeed, at Don Meuang there was only one exit from the international terminals and it was a gate in a wall thus it was easy for somebody to note who was picking up passengers. Suwannaphum provides newer challenges for the airport mafia. Namely, there are a number of motorway slip roads leaving the new airport so it's much harder to see which taxis are making off with the passengers. The punishment at Don Meuang was a beating and this was handed out on occasion as reported by the local media.

The legit Taxi operators are afraid of the Airport Taxi Mafia but the AOT does nothing.

Nice introduction to Thailand at the new world class airport.

Get an overpriced ride into town by criminals. Great.
