Trat—At 2:30 PM, on January 24th, 2024, the Trat Coastal Aquaculture Research and Development Center (CARDC) received an emergency report of a speedboat colliding with a reef, causing a shipwreck 16 miles away from the Laem Thian area, Koh Kood, Trat.

After 30 minutes, Trat CARDC lost contact with 12 tourists and 3 crewmates at the speedboat. Three Trat marine rescue speedboats were dispatched to coordinates 3532 as reported by the victims.

However, the marine rescue teams could not find the victims or the speedboat in the reported area, according to the rescue team.

The rescue speedboats then searched the vicinity with the assumption that the speedboat might have drifted away due to the ocean waves. At 5:15 PM, the marine rescue teams spotted the victims floating with life jackets in a weary condition, reported the rescue teams.

According to Thairath it was not a speedboat, they state it was a wooden fishing boat 'Netwari' of 24 gross tons used to take tourists on fishing trips.

A tourist speedboat crashed into a reef 16 miles off the Laem Thian area on Koh Kut, Trat on January 24.

The Trat Coastal Aquaculture Research and Development Center (CARDC) dispatched three marine rescue speedboats at 2.30pm to the island with the aid of 12 tourists and three crew members who were stranded.

However, at one point the rescue teams lost contact with the group waiting for help, said a CARDC spokesperson.

“After 30 minutes, we were in the dark about the tourists and crew. It was a race against time and the vastness of the ocean.”

Undeterred, the rescue speedboats scoured the waters, expanding their search radius when the victims and their ill-fated vessel proved elusive. Battling treacherous waves, the rescue teams clung to the hope that the speedboat had been carried away by the currents.

Speed boat, boats, busses, mini-vans, truck and lorry drivers...   these all seem to be jobs that Thai's just pick-up through no other reason that they were there, in the area, knowing the people etc and just 'picking things up as they go along'  without any specific and dedicated training training and certification....

... the result of this fill the news...  no one bothers or cares...   as much as I love Thailand, this '3rd world attitude' towards safety really lets it down.

They didn't think much to the Ocean:
The waves, they was fiddlin' and small,
There was no wrecks and nobody drownded,
Fact, nothing to laugh at at all.

So, seeking for further amusement,
They paid and went into the Zoo,
Where they'd Lions and Tigers and Camels,
And old ale and sandwiches too.

Surely with all these boat incidents there must be a collective noun for this type of Hub wannabe (Thailand Hub of Sinkings)

Further suggestions on a post card.

Sunk boats are us.com 🤣

My guess - speeding for the current sea conditions lead the the boat breaking apart/flipping and sinking

driver error and poor decision making

Now if the tourists hadn't come to Thailand, this wouldn't have happened. Their fault. Deport them.

I doubt speed was an issue

It wasn't a speedboat, it was a modified fishing boat to take people on fishing trips

See earlier post with photo of the wooden fishing boat 'Netwari' of 24 gross tons used to take tourists on fishing trips.

The passengers were all Thai 'tourists' out for a day's fishing trip.

We're a little further up the coast, Chanthaburi, similar day and 4 hour evening (for squid) fishing trips available on wooden fishing vessels modified to take people out.
