the end of an era - again

So, it’s been about 16 months since I planted my first mj seed, and in terms of growing it’s been pretty successful and very simple, despite the usual new outdoor organic grower mistakes.

 

But in terms of the bigger picture, as I mentioned in one of my first posts on this forum, the window in the weed laws was likely to be short-lived, and this wasn’t based on hearsay or wishful thinking among foreigners, but on the opinions of Thais in the Dept of Health.  And now it’s as certain as anything can be here that the window on weed will be closed this year.

 

Personally, I’ve enjoyed the trip down memory lane to the high days of my youth, but it comes at a price of course – in my case, as someone who prefers the controllability of smoking, that would be lung pollution.

 

Pretty soon the forum will be full of angst about the air quality in the hot/burning season, but I’m pretty sure it’s insignificant compared to dosing your lungs up daily for “recreation”. As I haven’t smoked anything for decades, it’s a price I no longer want to pay.

 

Talking about those high youthful days, back then mj was part of countercultural lifestyles for most people that I knew, and I've been pretty stunned over the last year at how attitudes have changed since then, as I have not had any contact with stoners during that time. 

 

Now weed seems to be rife with petty capitalists growing in tents in their spare room. This seems completely at odds with the philosophy of alternative lifestyles or expanding consciousness (always a dubious reason for taking drugs anyway). Dedicating a bedroom to intensive factory farming? not for me thanks.

 

But more seriously, these new growing methods have a huge carbon footprint, and on the large north American scale have been environmentally damaging on a vast scale – what makes it worse is that the massive oversupply there has resulted in mj crops being destroyed – all that environmental damage for nothing. This is all in the public domain and easily found on google.

 

On the other hand, I have learnt over the last year that industrial hemp is one of the most highly efficient methods of carbon sequestration, and can easily be processed into thermal housebricks among other things. This kind of project interests me a lot, actually far more than creating further environmental damage just to get stoned. Having been stoned thousands of times, it’s not something  I need to dabble in any more, and please let’s not kid ourselves that recreational is medicinal. So my evergrowing stash is now on the compost heap.

 

Anyway,  each to their own, happy trails….

At 30-40bht/gm it's cheaper to buy than to grow myself.

Not sure about any environmental impact, I used sun and lamps powered by solar = ZERO impact.

And I can't see how growing weed is any more harmful to the environment than growing tomatoes!

 

I seriously doubt there will be any significant changes to the cannabis law in Thailand.

Your relationship with weed seem very complicated. If someone is growing just to make a baht (or buck), it will never be a successful endeavor. One must grow for the sole purpose of having passion for doing it and the need for clean meds. The retail crap for sale in the dispos here is not nearly as satisfying as the nugs we grow ourselves. The time and care spent and the end result if what makes it worthwhile. “If the farmer isn’t happy with his crop, there can never be satisfaction with the task.”

I can understand people growing it themselves as a labor of love or a small passion project, but it's not something that I (or the majority of people) want to spend time doing. Just like very few people that drink beer or spirits make their own alcohol. And at any given time I'll have 10 or more different strains of beautiful high quality bud on hand that I have paid very little money for. Personally, I could never obtain that much variety of high THC content weed by growing it myself, nor would I ever want to wait months for a plant to mature (and possibly have it yield only low THC) when I can buy an unlimited amount of ready made product at any moment I want it. Thus, rarely are people converting their home interiors into miniature cannabis farms filled with lights, coolers, and fans. 

 

As for the carbon footprint issue, I always laugh at those kinds of naive comments in general. Want to reduce your carbon footprint? Get rid of your car, your second home, don't fly on airplanes, don't eat beef, and definitely don't have children. The rest of anything else you can possibly do on this planet pales little by comparison. 

 

On the legal front, nothing will materially change in Thailand with the cannabis laws this year. Unless they put cannabis flowers back on the list of criminal narcotics (which they have already expressed no intention of doing) then the only thing that can possibly change is the need to obtain a trivial piece of paper that says you have a medical need to consume it. Too many large financial interests are already involved to turn back the proverbial cannabis-clock in any meaningful way. 

 

Last thing, get yourself a dry herb vaporizer or make your own cannabis oil. Lung pollution issue solved. The need to smoke big bong hits and damage your respiratory system is long a thing of the past. And breathing in the constant heavy PM2.5 in Thailand 24-hours a day can be far worse than the occasional toke.

The laws aren't changing. 

Switch to edibles.
