Thinking?really?you Can Do That?why?

Featured Replies

Thinking? We say it's important. We say it's what makes us, us. Does the ability to think mean that you exist? Does the ability to think mean you are what you 'think' you are?

If so, define thinking. Is one thought better than another? Is one thought closer to the definition thinking than another? If thinking is what makes us, does not thinking unmake us? Does this mean that studipity is a disease that attacks our very existence?

Do you think? Why? What about? Can you stop thinking? Sometimes I can't. Does this mean that I am more real then those you can shut out their thoughts?

Not fluent in six million forms of communication? Out dated, out posted, out gunned, old model, rusty, crusty, but still ticking?

What then, if you don't think, does your programing tell you to tell me?

Sometimes I sit and think and sometimes I just sit.

Thinking? We say it's important. We say it's what makes us, us. Does the ability to think mean that you exist? I wouldn't say so. One could just as easily make the argument for having the ability to "feel". Does the ability to think mean you are what you 'think' you are?

Do you think? Why? What about? Can you stop thinking? Yes, I can, though that wasn't always the case. Sometimes I can't. Does this mean that I am more real then those you can shut out their thoughts? I think it only means you have not yet developed that ability.

Strong you are with the sanity. Does not feeling just end up as thoughts thus thinking about what you feel? Don't people have to think about what they are feeling before they can say what they are thinking? Thinking to recognize anger, depression, happiness, what have you?

Bops, you always surprise me. Pleasantly, though. :o This is certainly a topic worthy of reply.

What are thoughts? Where do they come from? Why do we have thoughts and what is their purpose then? Beliefs are thoughts, too. But beliefs are merely the same thoughts repeated over and over and over again. IMHO, the question that is perhaps the most important is, what effects do thoughts produce?

Bops, did you ever see the movie, The Sphere? For those who haven't I'll give a brief plot outline.

In the middle of the South Pacific, a thousand feet below the surface of the water, a huge vessel rests on the ocean floor. Rushed to the scene is a group of American scientists who descend to the depths of the sea to investigate this astonishing discovery. What they find defies their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a massive spaceship, undamaged from it's fall from the sky-and at least three hundred years old.

What they find boggles the mind as they discover a perfect metal sphere. What is the secret behind the sphere? Will they survive the mysterious 'manifestations'? Who or what is creating these? They may never live to find out.

In short, what the sphere helps them discover is that thoughts produce reality. Unfortunately, as is the case with 99% of the movies that deal with 'fringe' phenomenon, this potentially world-shattering and extremely liberating concept is cast in a very dark and ominous light. For while the idea is put forth that thoughts create it is only the grimmest and unsavory of thoughts that seem to manifest. Duh!!!!!!!

The point of bringing this movie up is that I thought this particular film came closest to unveiling a truth that most have very little awareness of.

What would happen if we were to stop thinking? If we were able to, in a physically attuned and physically orientated conscious state, shut off our constant and never-ending internal dialogues to ourselves? From what I've learned I would say that the world, as we know it and as it appears to us in such familiar fashion, would cease to exist. For it is precisely our continual, and quite necessary, endless thoughts that support the world as we know it.

Although, this would not imply that we would cease to exist. Why? Because we are not our thoughts. Thoughts are merely the tools which we use to create, to manifest, an utterly magnificent outer world that springs from the fountain of who we really are. And because we have complete freedom to think what we please it then becomes our endless choice to pick and choose which thoughts we would like to entertain.

Those are my thoughts, in short, about thoughts. :D

Think what you will, believe what you will, it's your choice, it's the bed you make for yourselves. Be happy. :D

I'm not sure. I could only speak of my own experience.

While some answers here might be of a philosophical nature and open for opinion, others are more neurological, dealing with the brain, central nervous system, etc. I'm no expert in that, though I'm sure someone else here may be.

If you'll notice, if you would pay attention to your thoughts, you'll find that feelings, emotions, follow your thoughts. Think a happy thought and how do you feel? Think a negative thought and what's your feeling response? Emotions, IMO, serve to let you know, on a feeling level, the content of thoughts you happen to be entertaining.

Imagination, on the other hand, is a tool that allows us to perceive what does not yet exist in our outer world. If it were not for imagination we would certainly be stuck in an existence that could never change from what is in the moment. And I would say that imagination follows thought, too.

BTW, if you think about it, can you name a single item that man has produced which did not first exist as a thought in his mind? Hmmmm. Telling, isn't it?

Post-It Notes.

Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.

Cynical thoughts. Beware of what you accept as personal truth. You may find yourself living it - good or bad.

Never ending choices of what to think, of what to believe. Nice to know you can change both anytime you please.

It tells me to tell you that my head hurts. But then I realise I dont have a head, so the thought confuses me. I want to evolve, get a-head, or ahead, im not sure which. In my resesses a small voice is telling me "if you want to get a head/ahead get a hat". But, as i dont have a 'head' then why get a hat. Or, if it means ahead, then how will a hat help me progress? Im still trying to work out where the small voice is coming from...

Oh GOD! :o:D :D

I try to be a good buddhist and clear my head every now and then.

Recently I watched the Harry Potter goblet of fire movie. the headmaster of the school has a "pensieve" which carries the man's thoughts/memories so he's not burdened by them. He just plucks the memories out of his head and puts them in this bucket. I want one.

I think you all think too mutt.

How can you think too much? Will something wear out in your brain? (If that's where thoughts originate?)

I think i found the small voice.

Its telling me to kill you all.... :o

easy there Ee-a-lot..

Take a deep breath, relax maybe sleep on it...

I think i found the small voice.

Would you whip me a little first?

Everything is A O-K, i took a short nap as suggested, and realised the voice was actually saying "buy everyone in Bedlam a Beer".

I have realised this voice speaks utter nonesense and will no longer pay it any heed.

Would you whip me a little first?

These are not questions we encourage on this forum.

Thinking is the first sign of intelligence.

This is not encouraged by the authorities.

If you wish to remain in Thailand and on TV you will cease thinking immediately.
