The trouble in Thailand is the lack of responsibility and sexual education of many (in terms of pregnancy and STDs, "very" widespread...). At least when i was in high school in the 90s (French expat school in Madrid, Spain) we had condom machines and "morning after Pill" at the nursery if needed. In the 1990's - early 2000's there were dozens of curtained love hotels in the north. I especially liked the old Red Rose Hotel ? in Chiang Rai with its' themed rooms, right next to the abandoned Vietnam War era airport runway - I believe it has since been demolished. Went looking for some of my old haunts when in CM last August - the biggest & best of the old 'love hotels' in Santitam CM apparently went broke during covid, so now the owner rents the rooms there by the month, not the hour. Place was full of tuk-tuk drivers, Burmese workers & girlfriends etc. Must be different in your neck of the woods, because the north was literally a ghost town last year. As you say though, most tourists would not have a clue about the existence of such places, as they are mostly intended for use by 'locals'. The lock down blocked most access to Mia Nois, Giks and gfs and left everyone stranded at home with the old wifey and the kids. At the beginning time frame (Nov '22) we were still in lock down without a foreseeable end in sight and coordinating live video chat with open bathroom times wasn't as easy as having said "side women" making and posting videos for their guys. Why do you think there was such a notable run on toilet paper sales above all else? You didn't really think being locked down was causing a massive increase in the need to poop did you? I'd bet a rerun of the same study from Dec '23 to Dec '24 would show a slowing trend in searching those same sites.
