I've heard it's one month, 45 days, and I've heard 2 months.

So for example, if the due date is May 23, can I go on March 25?

No. You could try for an exception (at a superior) if you have travel plans (with some documents).

Game of luck.

I deal with Korat and it's one month in advance. My ext always expires on 31 July each year, so I always renew sometime in the first week of July.

The usual time is 30 days and you loose no stay time, anniversary to anniversary

Some offices will allow 45 days. It all depends on LOCAL policy.

Google the local office phone number and ask them.

At one (1) office - UNCONFIRMED, someone claimed they did 90 days early several years ago

Best to ask in your reporting office.

Think there have been reports of even earlier than 30/45 days, with proof of travel.

According to the Phuket Immigration volunteers page (and consistent with my experience) in Phuket one can go to Phuket immigration (to obtain a 1 year extension on one's permission to stay in Thailand, for reason of retirement) 45 days before the current permission to stay in Thailand expires

As was noted previous by DrJack54, it really depends on one's provincial immigration office.
