Two suspected southern rebels were killed and one officer was injured in a clash in Sai Buri district of the southern province of Pattani today.

Acting on a tipoff, about 50 members of the security forces rushed to lay siege to a rented house in Trobon sub-district, where two suspected insurgents were hiding.

The officers then sought help from community leaders and Muslim religious leaders in the village to persuade the two men inside the rented house to surrender and lay down their arms, but to no avail.

I feel saddened that this has happened during the holy month of Ramadan.

Insha'allah this will one day stop and the people of Patani can live in peace. Probably after the kuf'aar depart from the region insha Allah.

"Acting on a tipoff, about 50 members of the security forces rushed to lay siege to a rented house in Trobon sub-district, where two suspected insurgents were hiding."

A little too anxious to laying siege (generally with violence) without confirming who made the tipoff (army?) and identifying the two suspects? Asking to negotiate AFTER laying siege is not done in good faith and invited resistance.

But as the South continues to be under a State of Emergency since at least 2014, no one in the South has any constitutional protections.

Islamic terrorists, not 'insurgents'

Incorrect.

"An insurgency is a rebellion. Insurgencies are movements to overthrow governments."

In this case a rebellion to Thailand's overthrow of an indigenous Malay Muslim sovereign state The Kingdom of Patani, forced annexation into the Kingdom of Thailand (similar to Russia's forced annexation of Crimea) and repression of the Malay Muslim language, traditions, ethnicity, and customs to make Malay Muslims second-class citizens.

In effect it is Thailand who is the terrorist.

I bet many countries that Islamists and Muslims have taken over by force or out-breeding the native inhabitants, and promoting, under threat, their 7th-century religion, wish the Muslims and their ilk would go back to their countries of origin.

Then nearly all could live in peace!

Seem to recall in days gone by, Afghanistan was peaceful and Buddhist, Lebanon was Christian and tolerant. Iran was another, then we have the Horn of Africa, etc

These countries and vast areas seemed to thrive until Muslims got a foothold.

Then, of course, we have Christian persecution in Muslim states, but little seems to get said about that as it doesn't fit the narrative.

I bet the indigenous populations of those countries and locations wished they hadn't been subjected to repression and having their customs ignored and trampled to make way for a stoneage, violent, religion with their forced FGM, beheadings, Apostasy laws, Anti Gay, misogynistic laws and practices.

You might learn more reading "Buddhist Fury: Religion and Violence in Southern Thailand" by Michael Jerryson.

"An image of a Buddhist monk holding a handgun or the idea of a militarized Buddhist monastery tends to stretch the imagination; yet these sights exist throughout Southern Thailand."

The Southern Malay Muslim conflict reminds me of Christian suppression of indigenous North American Indians.
