Thailand news - Two New Zealand men are now in custody after a weekend assault on a Phuket policeman after a nominal traffic infringement in Chalong. The Kiwis even ended up holding the policeman's gun and tried to take his phone from him.

Thailand's deputy police chief has now been officially summoned over allegations of corruption in the investigation of an online gambling website. He says he hasn't yet seen the summons as he was still up on Chiang Mai as part of the Thai PM's security contingent.

Meanwhile the PM has called on a ban of corn imports from neighbouring countries in the ongoing battle against the PM2.5 and smoke haze in the northern region. Royal Rainmakers have also been called in to assist.

Tim Newton Today is a daily take on Thai and regional news and issues of interest to expats and foreign tourists.

I can think of a lot of stupid things people can do  in Thailand, but attacking a police officer and taking his firearm away would be at the very top of that list. The IQ of these two Kiwis combined can't be above 80, there is just no way.

There's been a recent surge of farang attacking Thais, and this one just about takes the cake, what concerns me most is if this trend continues are all of us going to be tarred with the same brush? We all know if you get into a fight with a Thai, then other Thais take it as an attack on all of them and seek revenge. It's not going to be much fun for any of us if we start becoming targets for revenge.

OMG, it is becoming worse day by day. They will kick us all out one day. Who are these 2 clinical idiots? Look like adults but behave like 5 years old spoiled and very stupid children. Are those Tiktok generation’s representatives on their first visit abroad?

It doesn't get much stupider than that. If the two brothers are unlucky, they could face a prison sentence of several years without parole.

The two NZ are still alive - maybe they made the correct choice.

There is a lot of conflicting information, but it appears the Police Officer was angry and went for his gun and the NZ guys tried to prevent him drawing, in doing so the loaded gun fired (which means the Police officer had a chambered round and safety off)...

Dangerous stuff but there is surely more to this story...

... It could be NZ guys protect themselves against 'crazed police officer' who drew gin.
