He is being honest from my experience of government hospitals here. If ya

can get back to UK and can still access nhs ( or spend the time back home to 're qualify for nhs) do it . Proper job done by people who care and not looking at you as a cash flow, obviously you've been in los for a long time so should understand this is a 2.5 world country (being polite and not saying 3rd world) esp government hospitals and esp esp how Farang treated in then ( my personal experiences). Or pay stupid money to the private hospitals to do it with most prop the same surgeon who would do it in the dragconion government hospitals. No different in any agency here you pay for promotion. Not on skill and sadly this applies to the medical  profession

After 4 attempts to repair and which I believed to be a routine operation I am looking at the the possibility of going back to the UK. I am sure it will be more than a year to sort out. I am hoping for a good outcome when I go back next week and the Dr as seen the result of the scan.

I did some research on this and they say post-surgery complications like chronic pain are very common

My husband had it done & after 1 month there was no more discomfort. It was robotic surgery at Bumrungrad.

But you have travel cost to consider. Plus hotel before & after. Having lived in India I would not consider getting an op there. Esp. when I know nothing about the hospital.

Yes I know, lived there myself . Always used Calcutta ,as nearest, and cheaper about £120 return at times from BKK, plus hotels are a gift if booked thru a booking site, used to stay 4 star.

Saved my life by early screening there for cancer, went because it was cheap, quick and damned good, also had turp operation there, private hospital,5 days in hospital years ago

I returned to  Uk after diagnoses for cancer treatment, quicker than quick. Can always use opinions of past treatments at various hospitals on the web, fact is I'm considering returning to India from UK for further  non cancer medical treatment

Pricing - do your own research - the prices I have paid or seen pals pay range from 80,000 baht ( in my case ) to 310,000 baht paid by an American friend. It depends on your grade of hospital, personal medical needs, length of stay etc. You live in Thailand, put in the hard miles and find out for yourself.

You actually have no need of a referral letter to go anywhere since as a foreigner you have to pay regardless

Unless he is on the SS system paying 400 baht a month ie an ex teacher. Then he has nominated his hospital and therefore has to abide by the rules I presume?

If on SS then yes he has to follow hospital referral to get the care under SS. However as he said "my local g9vernment hospital" rather than "my SS hospital" I am assuming he is not on SS.

Also depends on whether open vs laparoscopic procedure.

I just booked an operation date to fix my hernia at a government hospital. One night stay inclusive, open surgery 13,000 Baht. My wife phoned Bangkok Hospital. Open surgery 180,000 Baht. Laparoscopic procedure. 350,000 Baht.

You pays yer money, you takes your chance.

If you are in good health ie no heart issues and no other problems with your body then I would go for it at a govt hospital. If you have ANY risks due to health issues pay the 180k like I did. I have heart disease and had to be monitored after I came out of sedation.

Would a private hospital get you better treatment cuz you paid a higher price? Here in Thailand we all know surgeons/doctors move around private/government hospitals. Yer pays yer money you takes yer chance. With regards to the price differences  I'll take my chance. The difference in price is unbelievable.

Yes, doctors move around But do you really think that top doctors, many who trained internationally, would move from a quality private hospital to a lower Gov't. hospital.

A high percentage of the top doctors you describe hold faculty positions at large government teaching hospitals. (And I would hardly call such hospitals "lower").

I didn't say I was looking for an international trained doctor to do my hernia repair. Sure I want value for money but we only find that out with hindsight. At my age if I get 10 years pain free repair then the cheapest surgeon will do for me. An 180,000 Baht procedure compared to a 13,000 Baht procedure leaves me in no doubt as to which you would choose.

I think you dont understand or maybe have never been to a thai govt hospital. Its all budget control. Low standards. crowded. Old rooms. Old equipment. Old surgery rooms. What about the quality of the actual mesh?

You come out of the anesthetic. Any complications? In a private hospital you will have better care. ICU is available. Dr comes to check on you after surgery. Never happens in a govt hospital.

It sounds like you cant afford a private hospital. Please let us know your experiences in the govt hospital. Report again 6 months down the line.

Bumrungrad was a lot cheaper than your quote from Bangkok Hospital. Same op method.

Open surgery has a much longer recovery & hospital stay.

There is no Bumrungrad hospital where I live. As for hospital stay I'm only doing one night which is included in the 13,000 Baht. I doubt that'll be a private room but heck it's only one night. By the way what are Bumrungrad charging just in case others may be interested.

1 week before Songkran last year I discovered an inguinal hernia after playing a strenuous game of badminton on a Friday evening. On Saturday I went to a local clinic that confirmed my fears and he offered to get me in for the op (open surgery) the next day! Roi-Et General Hospital, private room for one night.
฿500 clinic. (Surgeon)
฿18,000 hospital incl.
฿5000 clinic back-hander for immediate op. Normal waiting time is about 3-4 weeks.
฿400 clinic post-op check-up.

I had chronic pain for 2-3 days afterwards which gradually dissipated over the next 2-3 weeks. 3 months later I was back playing competitive badminton, albeit less frequently.
I still get the odd spasm but nothing that over concerns me.

A friend in the UK has been waiting over 12 months for the same op.  There it's a day surgery procedure.

How about 20 years? I had a double hernia op at Queen Sirikit gov't hsp about 20 years ago, open surgery, one night's stay, typical & uneventful recovery. Been good every since, as recently confirmed by a routine abdominal ultrasound, and I've continued lifting weights, no pampering. About B25,000 then.

Most hernia ops are standard procedures, really don't require a top specialist at Bumrungrad and white tablecloths & linens.

Good luck, i just got a quote for a minor 30 minute knee Arthroscopy at Samitivej Sriracha for 380,000 baht, cheaper to fly back to UK, ridiculous price

I suspect he did not mean Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok but rather one of the provincial affiliates and these often charge more, especially BPH.

Price at Bangkok Hospital in Bkk for laproscopic is 287,500.

Indeed not. Any competent general surgeon can do open hernia repair and any surgeon trained & experienced in endoscopuc surgery can do laparoscopuc hernia repair.

Bumrungrad was 216.000 a few months ago. It was a "package". Expensive yes.

10 yrs ago had a partly torn meniskus. Bumrungrad quoted 250K. My overseas insurer declined as it wld be cheaper in Europe. Got 2nd opinion in Singapore & was told not to operate as I wld gain nothing but likely have more problems. Got recommended physiotherapy. Never had the op done, walk painfree, cycle, swim. 2nd opinion pays.
